Gun Down
Jack is on the porch of the detachment whittling on a
piece of wood, he stops and checks his pocket watch.
it's three minutes to eight in the morning.
The street in Bordertown is deserted.
He glances across the street.
A man looks out of the upstairs window of the
saloon, he is loading a pistol as he watches
Craddock. Jack checks his watch again, it's 8 a.m.
The saloon doors swing open and one of the Clancey brothers steps into the street.
Jack does the same. He adjusts his holster and stares into the other mans eyes.
Jack's hat is shot from his head, as the Clancey boy drops to the street.
Marie is angry, "You didn't have to kill him Jack."
Willie follows the marshal, he is very impressed, "No one is faster than the marshal."
Marie is disgusted and tells Willie it's time for his reading
lesson, he says he's not interested.
"Willie Haddon you'll never learn to read and write."
"I don't care, the marshal can't read so why should I?"
Inside the detachment Bennett is also angry.
"It was a fair fight, that's the law of the west."
"I'll be back tonight Jack, try not to kill anyone
while I'm gone."
The remaining Clancey brothers leave town, they tell Dom to "Tell that marshal it ain't over."
Meanwhile, Willie sees a young girl sitting alone outside the stagecoach office. He introduces
himself. She says her name is Lucy Walker, her parents died on the stage, she thinks her aunt
lives near Bordertown and Lucy is waiting for her to
pick her up.
"But where will you sleep tonight if she doesn't come?"
Lucy starts to cry. Willie sees Marie coming out of the
store and runs across the street to tell her about Lucy.
Marie takes Lucy home. Clive goes to run a check on Amanda Walker, Lucy's aunt.
Marie and Sally are at the store, Sally is defending the marshal, "I think he did the right thing."
Jack comes in to buy "oil fer the whistle I been makin'
for Willie."
Marie tells him he is "like that big animal that used
to be great but is now extinct - a dinosaur. They died
because they couldn't change."
"Don't be preachin' Marie, I just had
two Sundays worth from Bennett."
Jack walks into the saloon and suddenly the noisy room becomes quiet. People get up and leave
without speaking to him. Seems everyone in town is mad at the marshal.
