Fourth Estate
Henry Jordan is the only candidate in the election for mayor of Bordertown. Alexandra Cord,
owner and operator of the frontier News, is not giving him much support in her paper.
Alexandra asks the marshal what he will do for work after
the election. "Don't see as that'll be a problem ma'am."
"So Jordan bought you too did he?"
Craddock explains that he can't be "bought" and
"I don't see no need for a mayor anyhow."
Alexandra delivers her papers to Marie's store, they are talking when Marie notices smoke
coming from the Frontier News building.
The fire is extinguished, and Jack investigates.
"Any idea who mighta done this?"
"Anyone who can read marshal, I guess that
leaves you off the suspect list."
Jack asks Jeffries what he is doing back in town. "Just meetin' with the citizens marshal."
"Where were you this afternoon?" Jeffries says he was at Mr. Jordan's ranch fixing a wagon
wheel. "Ya, well I'll be checkin' on that." Jordan tells Jack to go ahead "seeing how it could be
your last official duty as marshal." Jordan has promised the job to Jeffries if he wins.
Later at the detachment Jack tells Clive, "Well
it's just a job ain't it, no big deal. You know, come
to think of it, this is the longest I ever held a job,
'cept the army, think the pay was the same too."
The door opens and Jeffries walks in.
Jack: "How come you ain't out shootin' at farmers Jeffries?"
Jeffries: "Just takin' a look around", Clive tells him to get out, "I'll be back corporal, as your
equal."
Jack doesn't seem disturbed by the scene, he remains at
his desk, leaning back in his chair. Clive resumes reading
the paper, a few moments pass and without looking up he
says to Jack,"You know, all of a sudden, you don't seem
so bad."
Later in the saloon, Diane overhears the marshal ask Alexandra if she has any job notices for
help wanted, in her paper. She tells Zac that the marshal will loose his job if Jordan wins the
election.
"Do you know what this town will be like with
Jeffries as marshal?"
Before Zac can answer, Diane tells the patrons at the
saloon that Zac is running for mayor.
Jack, Clive & Alexandra are relieved.
Alexandra prints a glowing article about Zac Denny, she is not so kind towards his opponent.
Henry Jordan insists the corporal put a stop to this
"Canadian" paper interferring in an American election.
Clive tells him he can't stop Americans from buying the paper. When they get outside, Jordan
tells Jeffries to destroy the newspaper press. That night, Jeffries does as he is told, he smashes
the press.
