The Fourth Estate (continued)
Jack walks in on Zack who is practising his speech, "My fellow citizens..." Jack looks around like
he's wonderin' who Zack is talkin' to. The marshal asks "If you win I'm still marshal right?"
Later that evening, in the saloon, Jack calls for quiet. To get peoples attention he fires his gun
into the air (or should I say ceiling).
"Now we're gonna hear some speeches, then we'll get on with the votin'."
Zack gives his speech first, he promises to keep
Jack Craddock on as marshal if he wins.
When Henry Jordan gives his speech, he
asks Jeffries to come forward, and
introduces him as the new marshal in Bordertown.
Alexandra whispers to Jack "Look at his boots, they
are covered in printers ink.
Jack steps forward to question Jeffries about
damage to the paper press. Jeffries panics
and pulls his gun, using Jordan as a shield.
Jeffries is no match for Craddock,
who takes him down with one bullet.
Then they get on with the votin'. Clive reads the results.
Henry Jordan - 43 votes
Zack Denny - 43 votes, it's a tie.
"Is there anyone here who is eligable to
vote and didn't?"
Jack raises his hand. "Me... I plumb fergot."
Zack and Henry suck up big time.(I would think the
marshal would vote for Zack, BUT...)
"Do I have ta vote Clive?"
"No Jack, you can abstain."
"I can what?"
"You don't have to vote."
"Okay, I ain't."
So, the election results end in a tie and Bordertown must carry on without a mayor.
Alexandra leaves town on the stage. She asks Jack why he
didn't vote for Mr. Denny.
"I figured it weren't right fer a lawman to be owin' to
anyone." She tells him "You're half way to being a
decent man marshal. The next paper I set up, I'll
send you a copy."
As the stage pulls out of Bordertown Clive asks Jack "What are YOU going to do with a
newspaper Jack?" "I don't know, maybe I'll start wallpaperin' my cabin."
