| INTRODUCTION: The state known as Assam is situated to the extreme north-east of India.Assam in different periods was known in different names. The earliest name of Assam was "Pragjyotishpur". Scholars think that in ancient times astrology was situated in north-east region of India and that was why the region came to be known as "Pragjyotishpur". The name Pragjyotishpur is found mentioned in the epics and in ancient Puranas. The term Pragjyotishpur means 'centre of study of astrology in the east'.Then Assam came to be known as "Kamrupa". The earliest reference to the name of Kamrupa in found in the Allahabad Prasasti of Samudra Gupta of the Great Gupta Dynasty. The term Kamrupa is derived from Kambru, Kamru, the name of a non-Aryan God. Anyway, nothing can be said definitely regarding the origin of the term 'Kamrupa'. The name Kamrup continued to be used till the advent of the Ahoms in the Brahmaputra valley in the 13th Century. With the coming of the Ahoms Kamrupa came to be known as Assam. There are different theories regarding the origin of the name Assam. Some say it originated from the name Ahom; some say it originated from the uneveness of the country , and some say it originated from a combination of the Aryan prefix 'a' and Tai word 'Cham' which means defeated. Acham means undefeated, i.e., invincible. The Ahoms considered themselves invincible and so they named their country as Acham from which has been derived the name of Asom. Asom gradually was changed into Assam. |
