Plumbing the Depths of God's Love and Mercy

Luther Burbank, the famed naturalist, once said, "If I have made any worthy contribution to the world, it is the discovery of the great principle in botany that a plant born a weed does not have to remain a weed, or that a plant degenerated by conditions of nature does not have to remain degenerate."

That, I agree with Luther Burbank, was a great discovery. But a revelation of infinitely greater significance awaits the man who plumbs the depths of God's power and mercy as revealed on Calvary's cross. In the shadow of that cross the unclean are made clean, the dishonest become upright, and men and women with depraved tastes are suddenly transformed into children of light.

In a sense of which Burbank never dreamed, it is true that at the foot of Calvary's cross "a weed does not have to remain a weed . . . and a degenerate plant does not have to remain degenerate." If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are become new."

Most of use have learned these words as a  "Bible passage" ? perhaps in confirmation instruction, perhaps in Bible class or Sunday School. But have we demonstrated the basic Christian truth in our everyday behavior? Do we show by our faith and life that through Christ we have, indeed, become "new creatures"?

The power of the Gospel of Christ to transform the lives of men and women and children is the greatest miracle that God has revealed to man. Through faith in His atoning blood, "the children of wrath" become "the children of God," and "the children of darkness" are transformed into "the children of light."

Standing, in spirit, at the foot of Calvary's cross, we pray:

"Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood
              Shall never lose its power
Till all the ransomed church of God
Be saved to sin no more."
Amen and Amen! Come quickly, Lord Jesus!!
