You might think, "I've never killed anyone, never committed adultery" and maybe you haven't. However, let's take all bias away and honestly ask ourselves a few questions:

  • Have you ever lied? Even just once? We all have, let's be honest. God says 'You will not lie." There is no such thing as a "white" life. That's one law broken!
  • Have you ever stolen? Even something trivial, such as a pen or a paper clip? Surely we all have. God says "You will not steal". A second law broken!
  • Have you ever LUSTED after someone? Not necessarily taken action but simply had thoughts about another human being in this way - and we ALL have. Jesus said that anyone who LUSTS after another is guilty of breaking the seventh commandment "You will not commit adultery".

That's three laws broken, and by our own admission, we are lying, thieving adulterers at heart! And that's just three of God's laws, there are seven more and this isn't about to get any easier! And if we are to be judged by God according to God's own laws (and the Bible says that we will be) then we are all, every one of us, GUILTY!

Any crime, any law broken in a court of law is punishable by "---", and its severity tells you about the crime. If the punishment were a $20 fine, you would conclude the offence must have been pretty trivial. However, if the punishment were 12 multiple life sentences, the crime must have been heinous!

Now here's where people commonly misunderstand. People think "Yes but I've only told a few lies, only stolen menial things..." but as we saw before, breaking one of these laws - just once - is enough for it to be called SIN. Sin is breaking God's law. And if we have sinned, we have earned the punishment for breaking God's law. That punishment is HELL. Forever separated from God. Forever tormented. Our God is a holy God. That simply means He is perfect and cannot tolerate sin.
