Teen Driving

The National Safety Council joined scientists and traffic safety experts, with GM’s support, to create the “Teen Driver: A Family Guide to Teen Driving Safety.”

The Family Guide explains the elements of the Graduated Driver License system, so that new drivers and their families may use these steps in managing from “beginner to independent driver.” GM encourages young people not yet old enough to drive, new drivers and their families to read the Family Guide and apply its lessons to their new driving journey.

Parent Guide for Teen Driving: Learning to drive is both an exciting and challenging task for most teens. They can’t wait until they get their driver’s license and gain independence. For most parents, teaching their teen to drive can be stressful.
However, you will have help because your teen is enrolled in a driver education program at school. The driver education teacher will provide instruction on basic vehicle control and driving manoeuvres in various environments and situations. You and your teen also will have the aid of the Drive Right textbook. This Drive Right Parent Guide will help you coordinate your practice driving and other home instruction with the school’s driver education program.

This Parent Guide provides you with information to help you understand the licensing and training process for new teen drivers. It also provides tools to help you conduct practice driving sessions with your teen driver.
In most states a new driver needs to obtain a learner’s permit before beginning in-car instruction. Usually these states require an adult driver to accompany a new driver with a learner’s permit until a driver’s license is obtained. Some states have a restricted license phase for young drivers as part of a graduated licensing program. Information about graduated licensing and state regulations for learner’s permits and driver’s licenses is provided on pages 5–8. The rest of this Parent Guide provides guidance for practice driving sessions. Pages 9–12 provide suggestions for preparing for practice sessions and how to make the sessions run smoothly. Strategies for good communication and positive attitudes as well as driving techniques are included. It is recommended that the parent and teen sign a contract specifying each of their responsibilities. Two different contract forms are provided in the Parent Guide—one for the practice driving sessions and one for driving after a driver’s license is obtained.
To help structure your practice driving sessions, the Parent Guide provides In-Car Checklists to use in driving sessions. These checklists correspond with instruction on basic vehicle control and driving manoeuvres taught in the Drive Right program. Additional optional checklists provide instruction on driving in adverse conditions, handling emergencies, and driving with manual transmission. The driver education teacher uses the same checklists for in-car instruction. Coordinating your practice sessions with the school’s instruction allows your teen to practice the manoeuvres learned at school. The In-Car Checklists provide step-by-step procedures to review with your teen and a space to write comments. You can keep track of the driving sessions on the Practice Driving Log provided.
