 Project CHARLIE v1.0
 for NATO Fighters

by P.Mok ( [email protected] , [email protected] )

Welcome to the readme for Project CHARLIE, my latest ATF Toolkit LIB for use
with NATO FIGHTERS. If you downloaded this in hopes of getting it to work
with either USNF or just plain ATF, you are badly mistaken. For NATO only.

Lots of changes have been made, some I have spent more time on than others.
Here follows a more or less complete listing of changes I made, and any
relevant comments on what's been done.

INSTALLATION & UNINSTALLATION

Getting Project CHARLIE to work is easy. Place a copy of the
CHARLIE.LIB file into your ATF directory, i.e. C:\GAMES\ATF.
When you run NATO the changes should take effect, you can tell it's
working if at the bottom of the choose activity screen you see my
web page URL. Project CHARLIE makes no permanent changes to ATF/NATO.

Since Project CHARLIE makes lots of changes, it's probably not wise to
keep any other LIBs installed at the same time. You'll get very weird
effects and/or mixed changes that I can't predict, and you do so at your
own risk. Rename, move, or delete all other third-party LIBs before
running NATO.

To uninstall Project CHARLIE all you do is delete the file CHARLIE.LIB
from your ATF directory. That's it!

AIRCRAFT

* Helos Theme
Can't afford those new games, like Commanche 2, or Hind? Well
now you can fly cool helos without shelling out the extra cash. I've
tweaked with the choppers so that they're easier to fly than ever
before, and they kick some serious butt!

CMCHE.PT RAH-66 Commanche
The Commanche carries an undernose 20mm cannon that slews
(more effective against ground targets than air), a pair
of wings that each carry a pod of Hellfires and a pod of
Stingers, plus a pair of weapons bays for more Hellfires.
Laser designator is built in, so is IR. The Commanche
features Stealth technology, so it has a fairly small RCS.

MI24.PT Mi-24 Hind-D
The Hind is a flying tank. 1470 rounds of 12.7mm ammo for
a chin-mounted gun that eats vehicles for breakfast. 4
unguided B8 rocket pods and 4 AT-2 Swatters for those
harder to reach spots. No radar, no IR, you're going by
the ol' Mark One Eyeball when you fly this one.

* Vietnam Theme
If you were like me you were pretty pissed to hear that USNF'97 was
for Windows 95-only. There's no way it'd run on my 486... but now for
all of us who can only play NATO the Vietnam era has arrived... sorta.
Fly the F-4, A-6, MiG-17, and MiG-21 and use the latest in dumb bombs
and the first generation of smart munitions. You'll relive the
nightmare that they call Vietnam.

A6.PT A-6 Intruder
Really needs no introduction. The workhorse of the
U.S. Navy, with 12 hardpoints for loading just about any-
thing you'd want to bring along. Can be configured with
either an IR pod or a laser designator.

F4.PT F-4G Wild Weasel Phantom
Basically the same plane as featured in ATF/NATO. But it
carries 4 Shrike anti-radar missiles now instead of HARMs
because we didn't have HARMs in Vietnam. New tail texture
to make the F-4s look more like Navy/Marine variants.

F4J.PT F-4J Phantom II
Fly the attack fighter that Randy "Duke" Cunningham racked
up his kills to become an ace in. But you'd better be
good because this plane carries no guns! 4 Sidewinders,
a pair of Sparrows, and a couple of Mk-82s are all you've
got. Somebody wasn't thinking when they designed it.

F4V.PT F-4E Phantom II
The version that you'll probably appreciate more after
you've flown the F-4J. This one has a gun!

MIG17.PT MiG-17 Fresco
The basic frontline fighter used by the North Vietnamese
to patrol the skies over Vietnam. No radar, but its 30mm
cannon and impressive performance makes it one to watch
out for. Sure, so it looks kinda like an A-7, but hey,
when it starts shooting at you you're not gonna be able to
dwell on that thought for long...

* Strategic Theme
Electronic Arts seems to have balked at providing nukes in ATF/NATO
(funny, they didn't seem so squeamish about having them in Syndicate
Wars!), but have no fear, mass destruction is here. The following
planes have all been checked out for nuclear weapons capability. Most
of them now use the B2 HUD so that you can use the HAB camera for
dropping free fall bombs, with the exception of those that already have
HUDs (i.e. the F-16, F-117). By default none of them carry nuclear
weapons, you must load them on yourself when you fly them (this is so
computer controlled planes in the campaigns won't start nuking you
without warning).

A10.PT A-10 Thunderbolt
I wouldn't really recommend using any nuclear weapons with
the A-10, its role is more Close Air Support (emphasis on
CLOSE as in "to friendlies"!), and its speed and
altitude performance are rather lacking in terms of "Ohoh,
now it's time to get away from that nuke I dropped!!" But
I gave it a new HUD so that dropping bombs was easier (the
F-14 HUD doesn't do CCIPs).

B1.PT B-1B Lancer
If World War III were to break out the supersonic Lancer
would lead the attacks on targets deep within enemy turf.
Carries 12 AGMs or bombs inside a Common Strategic Rotary
Launcher (CSRL), which operates within an internal bay.
The B-1B uses some Stealth technology to lower its RCS.

B2.PT B-2 Spirit
Strategic upgrade of the B-2 with two rotary launchers
allows for the loading of up to 16 AGMs or bombs.

B52.PT B-52H Stratofortress
The old Buff still has some life left in her. Refitted
with a CSRL which holds 16 AGMs or bombs, plus 4 more
hardpoints on the wings. Built-in IR but no laser.

B52I.PT B-52I Megafortress ("Old Dog")
Inspired by "Flight of the Old Dog" by Dale Brown, a very
good book. The "Old Dog" was a (fictional) top secret
flying testbed at Dreamland which incorporated all the
latest technology into an old B-52. The rear M61 cannon
is replaced with a Stinger "air mine" launcher; the wings
carry up to 12 AMRAAMs; rotary launchers carry 4 HARMs,
and 16 AGMs or bombs (default is 3 of them big-assed
GBU-28s). Laser and IR come standard.

F14.PT F-14D Tomcat
The F-14D has air-to-ground capabilities, and can carry
various AGMs and bombs. Has one extra hardpoint for
carrying either a FLIR (default) or laser designator.

F15E.PT F-15E Strike Eagle
The Strike Eagle is all about air-to-ground. Carries both
FLIR and Laser pods internally, with room for 12 AGMs or
bombs and 4 AAMs externally.

F16.PT F-16A Falcon
F16E.PT F-16A (Desert) Falcon
The F-16 isn't really changed all that much. By default
the standard F-16 comes with a FLIR pod, but this can be
replaced by either a laser designator or a fuel tank.
The Desert variant defaults with a fuel tank.

F111.PT F-111F Aardvark
The star of the show when the U.S. attacked Libya. It
carries a nice mix of bombs and AGMs externally. Laser
and IR pods are included without charge.

F117.PT F-117A Nighthawk
This flying shovel still only carries two weapons, but
at least now it can pack a punch with nukes. Don't bother
loading any AGM-131As on it. No radar means no
lock. Use the B61 or the AGM-131E instead.

WEAPONS

* Nuclear Weapons

B61.JT B-61 Tactical Nuclear Weapon
Free-fall nuke based on the Mk-84: same weight, shape,
and arc of descent. Except it's guaranteed to clear out
all the cockroaches within a 4nm radius. Drop from above
25,000 feet (or lob-toss it) and get on outta there.

AGM131A.JT AGM-131A SRAM II (radar guided)
AGM131E.JT AGM-131E SRAM II (IR guided)
These two AGMs are based on the Harpoon and SLAM, and
more or less behave like they did. Until they reach their
target, at which point their plutonium core fuses with a
uranium shell and for a fraction of a second becomes
denser than anything else in the world and then expands
to a circle of destruction approximately 3nm wide. Oh
and because they're not rockets there's no smoke trail.

* Air to Ground

AGM45.JT AGM-45 Shrike
Older anti-radiation missile upon which the HARM was
based. Since the HARM wasn't around in Vietnam, I needed
an older missile for the Wild Weasels to use. Basically
it weighs a bit more and has a slightly shorter range.

AGM114.JT AGM-114 Hellfire (x3)
Laser-guided anti-tank rockets. Comes in a 3-pack, for
use with Commanche and other helos. Kinda nice since
they're fairly light and pack a nice punch.

PPC.JT Particle Projection Cannon
Oh, yes! MechWarriors this is for you. Ok, so there's
no such thing as a PPC (yet). But there could be, by the
start of next century... The PPC utilizes magnetic field
generation to form nuclear particles into a sphere that
it then accelerates at a high state of energy to cause
heavy impact damage as well as substantial collateral
heat damage. Which means it'll waste ground targets in a
hurry, and if you're lucky enough to tag an aircraft with
it, it's a goner. The drawbacks: this piece of
machinery is heavy (2.0 tons) and not all aircraft can
handle its bulk. And the cannon invariably fails after
25 shots from the heat. Only available in the future. :)

* Air to Air

AIM7.JT AIM-7 Sparrow
AIM120.JT AIM-120 AMRAAM
AIM9B.JT AIM-9B Sidewinder
AIM9M.JT AIM-9M Sidewinder
AIM9X.JT AIM-9X Sidewinder
Your standard buddies got slightly better. In general,
better performance and faster delivery.

AIM92P.JT AIM-92 Stinger (x3)
This little guy packs a pretty good punch. Lightweight
and fast, but it's got its limitations. Small warhead
means it's gotta hit dead on or else. Not all-aspect so
you'll have to go for the rear shot. Carried in 3-packs
for use on the Commanche and other helos.

* Guns

ADEN.JT Aden 30mm Cannon Pod
BK27.JT 27-mm Mauser BK27 Cannon
C130_25.JT 25mm Cannon
C130_40.JT 40mm Cannon
DEFA.JT DEFA 30mm
GAU8.JT GAU-8/A Avenger
GAU12.JT GAU-12 Vulcan Cannon
GAU13.JT GAU-13 Pave Claw
GSH23.JT GSh-23 23mmx2
GSH30.JT GSh-30 30mmx1
GSH301.JT GSh-301 30mmx6
GSH6_23.JT GSh-6-23 23mmx6
GSH6_30.JT GSh-6-30 30mmx6
M61.JT M61 Vulcan Cannon
RAH_20.JT 20mm Cannon
T12_4.JT 12.7mmx4 turret
The rate of fire on all these guns has been increased, so
they are more realistic and you have to watch your ammo,
it'll go a LOT quicker! You've been warned. :)
Some of the guns have been tweaked to produce more damage
on non-airplane targets, because it doesn't make sense
that a bullet would do 30 damage to a plane but only 1 to
a ship, for instance. A bullet is a bullet IMHO.

MISSIONS

All missions can be found in the "Play Single Mission" section of NATO,
under the title "Project CHARLIE", followed by the type of plane used.
I made these missions as a way for you to get acquainted with some of
the new modifications of Project CHARLIE, but there's no way I could
incorporate everything into a few missions. Try these out, then it's
up to you to check out everything else I didn't include on your own.

THANKS, DISCLAIMERS, RESPECTS

Thanks to all the visitors to my USNF/MF/ATF/NATO page, and downloaders of the
Project ALPHA for USNF, and Project BRAVO for ATF. Your encouragement and
praise have inspired me to crank this baby out.
Thanks also to everyone who wrote me with more suggestions for weapons, missions, etc.

DISCLAIMER. I borrow from Vark111's profound and concise disclaimer:
It wasn't my fault. I didn't do it. You can't prove anything. This is pretty
much my stance on the usage of this library. Use it at your own risk. It
didn't jack my machine up, so I ain't gonna buy you a new computer if it
jacks up yours! Live with it.

And I got to pay my respects to:

David C. Maschino and DuoSoft ([email protected]), the makers of ATF Toolkit.
Without whom this LIB would not be possible. Literally.

Vark111 ([email protected]), master LIB creator.
Originator of the Multiple Ejector Rack concept, and creator of VarkLIB for
NATO, also available on my web page. Thanks for all the help and tips
for LIB building and graphics, etc.

All the other USNF/MF/ATF/NATO web page creators, and the other LIB and
mission creators. You all get my respects, let's keep making these games
better.

SUPPORT, PROBLEMS, COMMENTS, QUESTIONS, AND AN UNABASHED PLUG

Having problems already? Geez and I thought I could take a break after all
this work... :)

If you're having problems, or have comments or questions, I can be reached at:

[email protected].

I will try to answer your questions, but please I hope you read this file
first before you ask. And make sure you leave a VALID email address for me
to reply to, I hate composing a long-ass reply only to have it bounce back.
