| UNDERGRADUATE THESIS Design of a Cardiac Hospital and Research Center at Ratnagiri, India Design Thesis. - (Fifth Year, Bachelor of Architecture) Duration of project : 1 year. Design thesis is a project which is done fully by a single student. The student in consultation with his thesis -in-charge chooses the topic . I took up a Cardiac Hospital and Research Centre at Ratnagiri as my thesis topic. The whole project was done in the following manner. Initial analysis : A Synopsis of the project was undertaken wherein the requirements and the needs of the project were highlighted . Then a site was chosen and a site analysis was done Actual Requirements : I have designed a 150 -bedded cardiac hospital with a capacity to increase patient bed strength to around 250/300 beds. The hospital has the following 5 major area requirements: 1. In - Patient Department 2. Out - Patient Department 3. Laboratories 4. Research Centre 5. Services The hospital was designed keeping in mind the above 5 requirements and the inter-relationships between these 5 major areas. Design Approach Hospital design involves the study of various complex traffic flows, the circulation patterns of doctors, nurses, ward boys, other hospital staff and more importantly of the patients. A proper integration of many depts. was done so as to separate different types of traffic as much as possible, and to make traffic routes short and to protect important functions against intrusion. Separation of clean and dirty operations, separation of different types of patients, separation of quiet and noisy operations, separation of traffic inside and outside the building, separation of pleasant and unpleasant functions, separation of types of workers are the basic principles in my design. The design of the hospital is totally Functional oriented. Design Details The requirements were designed as follows: 1. In - Patient Department The In-patient dept. was designed as a L - shaped tower block of Ground and four upper storeys. The ground floor has the administration / offices, Emergency ward, doctors' and nurses' change rooms, the Central Sterile Supply Dept. & the dietary. The L-shaped block has a double corridor system of hospital planning with the Service Core in the centre. The service core contains the patient and service lifts, sluice room, nurses'station on each ward floor, A.H.U.'s, mechanical and electrical ducts etc. The Operation Theatres and the Catheterization lab. are located on the first floor alongwith the post -operative rooms and isolation rooms. The second floor has the General wards- both male and female. The third floor has Single private bedrooms and twin patient bedrooms with toilets .The fourth floor has the Intensive Cardiac Care Units. There is a separate entrance for the Emergency Dept. on the ground floor. 2. Out - Patient Department The O.P.D. is a ground and first floor structure having examination rooms all around a central courtyard. It also has male and female gymnasiums. 3. Laboratories The lab. areas form the connecting link between the various departments of the hospital. So they are located centrally. The labs. are arranged around the larger courtyard. The Blood lab., the Pathology lab. and the Pharmacy are located at the centre of the hospital. 4. Research Centre. The cardiac research centre has many research experimentation rooms along with a small auditorium for conducting research seminars. 5. Services The service areas are located at the rear side. The hospital store, the laundry , the kitchen services, Central Sterile Supply Dept., the Air Conditioning plant as well as the Medical gases plant is located at the rear side. |
