PA Definition of Sobriety
PA is a program of abstinence. We
simply stay away from drugs one day
at a time. We maintain sobriety
through sharing experience, strength,
and hope at PA meetings and through
the suggested Twelve Steps of
recovery from pill addiction.
Because a definition of sobriety can
be a bit cloudy for a person addicted
to or recovering from a prescription
medication, we would like to propose
a working definition. PA is a program
of abstinence from pills and
medications that have become an
addiction. We maintain and affirm that
our definition of sobriety is abstinence
from
all mood altering substances,
including alcohol.  We have no
opinion
as a group on medications
prescribed by doctors for illnesses
and disorders, whether psychiatric or
medical. Because many of us came to
PA due to addiction to prescribed
medications, we say that we have
given up our right to seek a "sense of
ease and comfort" from chemicals
whether they be pain killers,
tranquilizers, or alcohol. We
understand that there are instances
in which medication is absolutely
necessary. We suggest that, when
these instances occur, we inform our
doctors of our addiction to and
recovery from prescription
medications and share our situation
with others recovering from pill
addiction before making a decision
about taking such medication.
