Editor's Note: Gopalan had sent SMS message on the Newsletter with a promise to send an e-mail,which never came. He was appreciative of all, but liked Prasad's and mine the most. Mukund had sent a detailed feedback - one exclusively on Prasad's article and the other on the rest of the Newsletter. I am reproducing both letters of Mukund.
Prasad,
Man your piece is excellent. I couldn't believe it!
This is perhaps your best ever. Amazingly good.
Can't praise it enough. The recollections from our
Ashok Nagar days were so thoroughly enjoyable. Need
more such pieces.
The thing that I remember the most is the way you used
Ramnath (I think I got the name right) to read all
those books in that library. He was a junior of yours
at Gill Nagar, and you promised to get him all the
latest Hardy Boys novels if he paid the nominal
renting fee of 50 paise or so. He would give you the
money and you would rent the book from this library
(which had a chettiar sign as the logo) and finish
reading it the same night and take it to him the next
morning. So with his money you finished the book even
before he got to see the cover! I still can't believe
you did that.
I forgot that the tailor shop was called the 'Orissa
Tailors'. I remember it being next to the ration
shop. And once when dad had taken us to the shop to
get a pant stitched for me, the tailor finished taking
all my measurements and asked if I needed anything in
particular. "Yes, I need two front pockets and a
'pick pocket' in the back," I replied, running my hand
over the right buttock. Both dad and you laughed your
head off in front of the tailor and I turned beet red
with embarrassment.
Man those were some really good days back then.
Affly,
Mukund
Dear Athimber,
Just went through the entire Newsletter ( It arrived
about a couple of hours back). It was very
interesting reading. It is nearly 11:40 p.m. here on
a Monday, and Prema is urging me to get to the bed as
I will have a terrible time waking up tomorrow morning
to go to work. But that is fine for one cannot stop
reading the Newsletter without covering all the
interesting topics. ( I can resist anything but
temptation).
Your description of the oil massage was just fabulous.
Makes me wanna go through this experience myself.
Kerala, of course, is a fantastic place.
Appa's article on Friendship was a good one (he should
avoid the double exclamation marks, though). I have
always been impressed by his positive outlook on
everything.
Chithi's drama review was also interesting. In India
mediocre movies hog so much of the limelight that
these kind of interesting plays sometimes go
unnoticed. Chithi has done a good job of highlighting
the talent in these fields too.
Gopalan's article has a confessional touch to it,
which I really like. I hope his advice will be more
useful that all this Atkins Diet Mania that is
sweeping across the U.S. I am weighing 80 Kgs +, and
need all the advice that I can get.
Mukund's Culinary Journey was so so (without uppu -
chappu, as they like to say in Tamil). He needs to
tone down this obsession with vazhapoo as it could
leave a bitter taste in the readers mouth. I will
advise him on this when I talk to him next.
Good Job Athimber, keep it up!
Affectionately,
Mukund
P.S. I think I need to hit the bed soon as I am not
making much sense anymore.
