"Westward the Star of Empire Takes its Course"
- banner on the railroad car that carried German settlers from Chicago to the Colorado Territories in 1870
Excerpt from the book "Experiments in Colorado Colinization" :
In view of the fact that agriculture had not kept pace with the feverish rush of the seekers after the mineral resources of Colorado Territories, Carl Wulsten, a citizen of Chicago, conceived the plan of organizing in the city, a society of farmers, mechanics and laborers, who with their wives and families would go to the great undeveloped West and enter upon the work of tilling the soil and setting up villages.  Departing Chicago were two hundred and fifty Germans with the banner of the RR car reading: "Westward the Star of Empire Takes its Course - German Colonization Society of Fremont County, Colorado Territory, Organized at Chicago, Aug 24, 1869, Carl Wulsten, President; Albert Phillip, Secretary; and T. Merten, Treasurer under the auspices of the National Land Company."  Freight cars were provided for livestock, food, agricultural implements, and machinery for sawmill, gristmill and guns with ammunition.
The WET MOUNTAIN VALLEY SETTLERS as Frank Schick (1890 Westcliffe, CO) remembers his great-aunt Juliana (Schick) KOHL telling him:
(It would appear that only the head of the household is listed here)

MISCELLANEUS:
One member of the Colony said the Colony was also known as the Lost Colony as many people scattered or died the first year.  Winters were severe, snowdrifts hemmed them in and they lived in tents while cabins were built.  The first crop had a late freeze and ... supply.

-Frank Schick (1890 Westcliffe, CO)
Frederich KOHL is my direct ancestor.  He was a blacksmith, farmer and machinist.  He came to America from Germany with his father, Philipp, and five brothers and sisters, Katherine, Joseph, Philip, and Theresa c.1848.  Philipp died in a cholera epidemic in Chicago in 1850 and the children were split up between orphanages and neighbors.  I do not know where Frederich went, but he enters the records again on October 2, 1864 when he enlists to serve in Co. A-13 Illinois Cavalry.  Shortly after the war was over, he met Juliana P. SCHICK and they were married by a Justice of the Peace in Chicago, IL.  They started their family and then in 1870 they joined the "German Colonization Societ" and moved to Colorado.  They settled and farmed a ranch near Westcliffe, CO and continued adding to their family.  On April 22, 1901 they sold the Westcliffe Ranch to Neville McKellar and moved to Aztec, New Mexico.  Both Frederich and Juliana are buried in the Aztec Cemetery in Aztec, New Mexico.
Apparently Juliana Schick's sister, Rosa Maria Schick, went with Frederich and Juliana KOHL from Chicago to Colorado.  She married ??? Schick (no relation).  Their son, John Schick married Mary Hiltman in Westcliffe, Colorado on April 28, 1889.  Their son, Frank Schick, was born in Westcliffe, Colorado on July 4, 1890.  (This is the Frank Schick who provided these records)
Theresa Kohl, Frederich's sister, also went to Colorado.  She was married to George T. Merten, who was either Treasurer or Secretary of the National Land Company, depending on which source you believe.  George and Theresa had two daughters. According to family history, George Merten "left the family in 1877".  Theresa then married John Ashcroft.  He was a miner in Aspen and Tincup Colorado.  It is said that John came from northern England ... when he was 14.  He came around Cape Horn to see San Francisco and worked in the ... Grass Valley and Nevada City as a "trip boy".
Another record in the Brewer Family compiled by ?? says that the Colony was headed by:
     Carl Wulsten, President
     George Merten, Secretary
     Albert Koch, Treasurer
     Frederich Kohl, Lieutenant
     John Hiltmann, Lieutenant
     Rudolph Jeske, Lieutenant
