Garrett
This schetch on the Garretts is taken from:

A BOOK OF GARRETTS compiled by Hester E. Garrett, published 1963, pp. 80-81, 118-122.

Some authorities trace the origin of the Garrett family to the Gherardini family of Florence, Italy.  The name there became Geraldini.  Thom (Tum, Tunc, Tonque) Gerard, born about 1040, Amalfi, died 1120, was founder of the Order of the Knights Hospitaler of St. John.  On of the Gheradini when to Normandy and thence to England with William the conqueror, by whom he was awarded large estates.  In France the name was Gerrard of Gerard.  The Garretts from Normandy were cloth merchants, or rather, weavers of cloth.  A branch went ot Wales where they could get cheaper fuel and labor for their manufacturies and were called Garrit, Garet, and somtimes Gerald.

During the reign of the feudal Kings of Normandy, the Garrett clan whose services consisted in part of keeping the signal fires lighted as a warning of contemplated attack by the enemy, were rewarded by having their arms emblazoned with the motto "Sember Fidelis", and so courageously did they discharge their duty that they were further honored all over the civilized world by reference to the upper rooms, from which the signals had been given, as "the Garrett."  From the early history of this family their name was synonomous with "torch-bearer."

In English records various spellings used almost interchangeably are:  Garratt, Garrot, Garat, Gerard, Gerrard, Fitzgerald (used in Ireland), Gerald and Garrett.

The English Garretts were for some eight generations closely connected with the English court, being Barons of Byrne and said to have been directly descended from King Edward II.  One Thomas Gerrard was living in Kent County, England in the latter part of the 15th century.  His son, Lawrence, was the father of John, whose son William was Lord Mayor of London in 1551.  direct descendants of this line emigrated to America.  The first Garrett in this country is said to have been one William, who came with the Jamestown settlers in 1607.  He is said to have been an ancestor of Edward Garrett, the progenitor of the South Carolina Garretts, from which Amanda (Garrett) Howard descended.
