THE ANCESTRY OF HIRAM BOLDING AND AMANDA GARRETT HOWARD

      The Balls are found among the early settlers in Virginia, among the most prominent of whom was the mother of George Washington.  The first one identified as the progenitor of this particular line was William Ball, who, according to William Watts Ball, a distinguished descendant, "with the Watts came down from Culpepper County, Virginia to South Carolina in the days before the Revolution when tobacco was declining.  The first Ball immigrant was styled 'Gent.' according to the custom of the old Dominion.  In 1800 he owned one slave and worked with his hands."
BALL INDIVIDUALS:
Elizabeth Ball was born in 1781.  She is the daughter of William Ball (1750) and Sarah Martin.  She married #1 Mr. Stephens and #2 Mr. Hitt.
Elizabeth Ball was born July 19, 1807 at South Carolina, and died March 7, 1874 at Georgia.  She married Isaac Garrett in South Carolina.  Children:  William J., Lemuel, John E., Mary Ann, Francis Marion, Young Garrett, Parker R., Sarah Priscilla, Elizabeth Fannie, Amanda Bowen.  Isaac and Elizabeth moved to Campbell County, Georgia in 1831 and settled on the east bank of the Chattahoochie River, where they acquired several hundred acres of land.
Francis Martin Ball is the son(?) of William Ball (1750) and Sarah Martin.  He married Ms. Hitt.
George Ball was born in 1779, and died in 1817 at South Carolina.  He is the son of William Ball (1750) and Sarah Martin.  He married Jemima Martin in 1799.  Children:  John.
James Lewis Ball is the son of William Ball (1750) and Sarah Martin.
Jeremiah Ball was born in 1777 and died February 9, 1856.  He is the son of William Ball (1750) and Sarah Martin.  He married Elizabeth Saunders.  Children:  Sally, Stephen, Elizabeth, Nancy, Frances "Fanny", Harris, Minyard, John, Jesse, Mary Priscilla, Young Jeremiah.  In his will, recorded in 2-Bk A-256, Dept. of Archives, SC, Jerimiah names Mary (d. 2/24/1862) as his wife.  Another record names Polly, indicating later marriages.  His will was proved on March 8, 1856.
John Ball was born in 1780.  He is the son of William Ball (1750) and Sarah Martin.
Martin Peter Ball was born in 1772.  He is the son of William Ball (1750) and Sarah Martin.
Mary Ball was born in 1774.  She is the daughter of William Ball (1750) and Sarah Martin.  She married a Mr. Sadler.
Parmelia Ball was born in 1773.  She is the daughter of William Ball (1750) and Sarah Martin.
Sally Ball was born May 8, 1804, and died November 25, 1855.  She is the daughter of Jeremiah Ball and Elizabeth Saunders. 
Stephen Ball was born May 28, 1805.  He is the son of Jeremiah Ball and Elizabeth Saunders.
Stephen Hitt Ball is the son of William Ball (1750) and Sarah Martin.
William Ball, Jr. was born in 1770.  He is the son of William Ball (1750) and Sarah Martin.
William Ball was born in 1750 in Lancaster or Fauquier County, Virginia, and died in 1805 at Laurens County, South Carolina.  He moved from Virginia to Old 96 District, South Carolina, and settled on the Saluda River in the southern part of what is now Laurnes County.  He was a Patriot and soldier in the Revolutionary War with service under Col. Elijah Clark.  (Records of the GA Dept. of Archives)  He married #1 Sarah Martin in 1769.  Children with Sarah:  William, Martin Peter, Parmelia, Mary, Jeremiah, George, John, Elizabeth, Francis Martin.  He married #2 Lillia Ann Hitt in 1795.  Children with Lillia:  James Lewis, Stephen Hitt.
