When we pulled up the blue carpet (notice it's still on the stairs) this is what we found.  The padding was pieced together from about 6 pieces in this little room. They had used hundreds of staples to hold down all those pieces. Those little white marks are marks from the foam padding.
And here is the same corner after it's been sanded down to the bare wood.  We will stain it to match the rest of the oak trim in the room. I couldn't talk dh into refinishing it, too.
This is what the entryway looked like after we removed the linoleum and underlying plywood. They had glued the plywood to the hardwood floor, then put nearly 40 nails in it to hold it down.  There was no way we could repair the damage they had inflicted, so...
...we made a trip to the "home improvement store" and picked out some ceramic tiles. I couldn't wait to see what they looked like in place. I'm as excited about these tiles as I am about the floor!
More pics as we get them!

The stairs before.
Actually, we had removed the carpet from the bottom step before I thought of doing the "before" shot. If you really care, you can go back to the photo at the top of the page and see a little bit of the carpeted bottom step.
to see the different ways I arranged these tiles.
I think we decided we liked it in a different pattern than is shown here.
