The King Palm (botanical name: Archontophoenix Cunninghamiana) is a widely adaptable palm that adds a
stately accent to any landscape, both residential and commercial. This popular, elegant, and fast-growing palm from southern and eastern Australia has grass green leaves, a slim trunk, and a long, smooth crownshaft. This is an easy-to-grow plant and when container grown indoors it should be given bright direct sunlight (preferably a south facing window). Requires ample water and is cold hardy to 28 degrees F, possibly lower if brief.

The Queen Palm (botanical name: Syagrus Romanzoffiana), native to Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina, has a smooth straight grey trunk ringed with evenly spaced leaf scars and topped with a large canopy of feathery plumes that strike a regal pose in the landscape. These lacy fronds are a dark glossy green and have double rows of leaflets that droop to the ground like double rows of fringe to cast shady patterns on the lawn. The Queen Palm is fun and easy to grow in pots or in the ground for outdoor environments and is excellent as a tall tropical accent for poolside or entryways. This palm suffers cold damage at 25 degrees F and may freeze and die at temperatures of 20 degrees F and below.

The Mexican Fan Palm (botanical name: Washingtonia Robusta) is perhaps one of the most recognized palms in the world. They are very fast growing and can reach heights of 100 feet in their native environments. The Mexican Fan Palm is slightly more cold tolerant than the above palms, as this specie can tolerate short-term exposure to temperatures as low as 19 degrees F with no signs of damage. It prefers sufficient water and full/partial sun. While these types of palms are typically grown outdoors, they also make great container plants for indoor environments when given the proper care and attention.

The Sago Palm (botanical name: Cycas Revoluta) is one of the most primitive living seed plants in the world as well as very unusual and popular ornamentals. They boast a rugged trunk, topped with whorled feathery leaves which trace their origins back to the early Mesozoic era. This very symmetrical plant supports a crown of shiny dark green leaves on a thick shaggy trunk that can grow to 10 feet. The plant is extremely slow gowing requiring about 50 years to achieve full height. As the plant matures, branching of the thick stem may occur which only adds to the interest and charm of this beauty. The Sago makes an excellent indoor container palm as well as out. Requires full to part sun and a fast draining soil. Cold hardy down to a low of 15-20 degrees F and is moderately drought tolerant.
