SCHOOL TO WORK

What is School to Work?

This initiative was created to help schools prepare ALL students with work based competencies and help them create career goals and interests.

We have created an elective course for 11th and 12th grade students in which they learn about careers, employment, and independent living skills.  They are required to shadow a mentor in a career interest of their choice or interview a person in a career.

What is covered in the class?

Career Information and Trends
Employment Process (Resumes, Cover Letters, Applications, Interviewing)
Work Place Skills (Teamwork, Communication, Problemsolving, Conflict Resolution)
Personal Financial Skills (Budgets, Taxes, Banking)
Entrepreneurship (Business Plans)

How does Job Shadowing work?

You chose a career interest and the teacher will call a business and sets up an appointment.  You are required to provide your own transportation to the work site and agree to the rules and regulations.  It may be a half day or full day and some careers can be shadowed after school hours.  If a mentor in unavailable for your career or transportation is a problem, then it is your responsibility to obtain an informational interview.  After the shadow or interview, you are required to hand in a written report and give an informal oral report in class to share your experience with others.
