Changeing Transfer Case fluid on Dodge Ram 3500
My 99' Dodge Ram 3500 4x4 has the NV241HD Transfer Case
Dodge Maintenance Schedule "B" has that the transfer case fluid be changed every 45,000 miles. The transfer case in located just above the skid plate, with two plugs, top being the fill hole and bottom plug being the drain hole. Truck should be driven before draining so the lubricant is warm and will flow easiler.
Fill plug
Drain plug
The only tool needed is a 10mm Hex wrench and a drain pan.
(1)The draining of the transfer case with the skid plate still mounted is messy but easier then taken the skid plate off . Use the 10mm wrench to open the top plug, when I opened mine, fluid poured out. I positioned the drain pan just behind the skid plate.
(2) This part is the messy part, I used a plastic for sale sign to channel the fluid down to the drain pan, I used my right hand to open the drain plug and the fluid flowed out with some force so be ready. I still got some fluid that leaked on the skid plate.
I used Dextron III automatic transmission fluid and filled to the bottom of the fill plug.
(4) After draining is complete I wiped down the transfer case and skid plate and installed the bottom drain plug and tightened.
(5) I used a transfer case/Diff on/off pour spout that I got when I got my fluid to screw onto the qt bottles of fluid. This made it easiler but left about 10% of fluid left in the bottle. I filled the transfer case till it started to flow out of the top fill plug and then installed the fill plug and had to wipe down the transfer case and skid plate a final time. After I dorve the truck for a couple times I rechecked the fluid level and was fine.
