Back with a Bang
previous day's entry March 31, 2004 next day's entry
Im back.  Ive returned to Cozad.  And there are plenty of stories from along the way, but my first official day here gets all the attention.

It came in with a bang.  Literally.  About 2:30 this afternoon my mom and I heard a call come across the scanner that a fire truck was needed at Hunt Cleaners.  (Hunts is a commercial dry cleaning company which is the family business of one of my best friends Holly).   We thought that strange, and then it came across that there was an explosion and to get help there immediately.  We ran to the front porch (We live a block south of Hunts) and saw the blackest, thickest, voluminous amount of black smoke.  Never in my life have I felt such sheer terror.  To know that there was an explosion in a building that my sister-in-law, my best friend, and her mom were in.  And then to see what was happening thinking there is no way anyone could survive a blast that caused that.  It was the scariest moment Ive felt in a long timemaybe ever.

For the record, everyone is ok.  By Gods giant hand, everyone got out, without even a scratch.  However we didnt know that standing on our front porch.  So I went into dramatic overdrive and took off.  Threw on my tennis shoes and started running towards the plant.  I didnt care.  I had to get thereeven if I did run straight through that black thick smoke TO get there.  As soon as I found out everyone was ok I lost it.  We just had to stand there and watch the huge building just engulfed in flames and the entire blue spring sky turned dark.  It was surreal.  More than surreal.  It was su-su-real-real. Then we find out the entire town is on lockdown.  (That term itself was overdramatic, but this town doesnt get excitement like this very often).  Point is, no kids are being let out of school unless a parent signs them out, and the entire North side of town was evacuated.  We cant get back to our house, and noone can get to some of my nieces and nephews.  Plus my nephew has heard whats happened, but has no idea if his mom is ok.  He was terrified, and the whole town was pure chaos.

The building burned for about 6 hours.  My entire family camped out at my brothers whos place wasnt evacuated.  I went back and forth between the fire, my brothers, and my friends families house. coughing the entire way cause my dumb ass inhaled all that smoke.    But by tonight the fire is out, people are back in their homes, and Holly and I went to Subway and had a severe laugh attack about the whole thingbecause . What else are you going to do???

I promise normally this thing will be filled with funny anecdotes and crazy insane stories, but for tonight I just want to say Thank You God for showing us a miracle.
