~ Ralphie ~

Ralphie was my first Heart Dog or more correctly, I was his. He loved Larry but his duty was to love and protect me and he did both for 13 years that weren't nearly long enough. A Group and multiple group placement winner in Canada, he needed that last major when he tore his ACL at the beach. He was a multiple Best of Breed winner over Specials in the US but his deserved American Championship was not to be. Ralphie was the first Irish Setter in Canada to participate fully in all activities as a member of the Real Canadian Superdogs. He toured Western Canada for 6 years before retiring. Many people were so impressed with this "Flying 747" (his nickname) that they would send fan letters afterwards. An incredible bird dog (before hunt tests), a trait inherited from his hunting/showdog parents and which he passed on to his kids. Fishermen were often astounded at his retrieving instinct and strong swimming ability - we had to be careful when the trawlers were out. There will never be another Ralphie and I miss him so much. We are so thankful that Bob and Pat Robinson took a chance on sending a pup "all the way to Canada". Until we meet again, My Boy.

OLD DOGS DO NOT DIE

We have a secret, you and I,
That no one else shall know,
For who, but I can see you lie,
Each night, in fireglow?
And who but I can reach my hand
Before we go to bed,
And feel the living warmth of you
And touch your silken head?
And only I walk woodland paths,
And see, ahead of me,
Your small form racing with the wind,
So young again, and free.
And only I can see you swim
In every brook I pass...
And, when I call, no one but I
Can see the bending grass...

Ralphie loved his tennis balls. Here he has four in his
mouth which he did by using his paws to shovel them in.
He lived to play with his balls, they were the reward we
used for agility and what made him such a good flyball
anchor (this was in the days before titling).
