Project "Living Wallpaper" - Zapscapes Conference

In September 1996 the Zapscapes conference, an international conference about the use of computers in landscape architecture, was held at Larenstein Agricultural College. I was asked to make a design for the decoration of the conference hall.

The idea was to accentuate the shape and space of the hall with its metal and concrete structures. All the inside walls were covered with white sheats, revealing the actual shape of the conference hall (half of a circle) and the buildingstructure, electricity cables and tubes. On the sheats we projected immages, slides and light-effects. Project 'Living Wallpaper' was a part of this decoration.

With 8 computercontrolled slideprojectors we made a slide show of four images next to eatch other, creating a slide wall of 4 meters high and 25 meters wide! During the conference the slides faded slowly into the next four, creating a living wallpaper as a backgroud for the podium. The slides show the different landscapes surrounding Arnhem. The chair is subject of the slide show, it connects the show with the vieuwers, sitting on the same kind of chairs. The chair takes us on a journey while moving trough the surroundings of Arnhem, from high (woodland and heather) till low (river and flood plaines). The total journey takes 1 hour, and repeated itself during the two days of the conference. The slideshow consists of 665 slides, the next pages will show a selection of 28 frames.
