The Republic of Vanuatu
Vanuatu, officially, the Republic of Vanuatu, achieved independence on
30 July, 1980, having previously been known as the New Hebrides, under
French/British rule. Espiritu Santo and Ef�te, site of Vila (the capital),
are the two largest islands. The population is predominantly Melanesian
with English and French the official languages, but Bislama, a pidgin
language is widely spoken. The islands cover 14,426 sq km (5,570 sq mi)
and comprise a 724 km (450-mi) a chain of islands in the South Pacific
Ocean. Its population is estimated at 192,910 (July 2001). Vanuatu is
located north of New Zealand and north-east of Australia.
