Your Cub Master is Tom Plate, an Eagle Scout from Denver, Colorado. Tom was born in Chicago but moved to Denver with his parents when he was a six-year-old. When Tom was in elementary school, he, too, was a Cub Scout. His pack was xxx in Denver. Tom became a Boy Scout and earned his Eagle; he was tapped out for the Order of the Arrow; in high school he was an Explorer Scout in a high adventure post. (These Scouts are now known as Venture Scouts.)
Tom is a 1974 graduate of Colorado School of Mines where he majored in Mining Engineering. He is an Active Alumnus of Mines and went to his twenty-fifth class reunion in May, 1999. Tom now works as a Coal Quality engineer for Consol Engergy in Pittsburgh. He began his career as a researcher for Conoco, which then owned Consolidation Coal, now Consol Energy. While he was at Conoco, Tom contributed to two patents and his name is on both of them! Since his graduation from Mines, Tom's job has taken him to Ponca City (OK), Morgantown (WV), St. Louis (MO), and, now, to Pittburgh (PA) where he has lived since 1996.
While Tom was in St. Louis, he met Sharon who was an Assistant Advisor to a high adventure Explorer Post. Sharon's group was going to the Boundary Waters for a canoeing adventure and she needed some help in teaching the Explorers canoeing skills. She called Tom and others, who, like her, were kayakers, and Tom agreed to help. After Sharon returned from the Boundary Waters, Tom joined her Post as an Assistant Advisor. Eventually he and Sharon got married. They have one son, Tom who is a first year Webelos Scout. When little Tom joined Cub Scouts, his whole family joined!
Tom, Sharon, and Tom are following an established Plate family tradition. When now Cub Master Tom joined Cub Scouts, his mother and father also joined. Eventually his three brothers also joined scouting! Henry F. Plate, Tom's dad, continued as a Scouter after his own children left Scouts. He now holds Scouting's highest rank, Silver Beaver.
When Tom isn't working at Consol or doing something with or for Cub Scouts, you might find him skiing in the winter or riding his bike or hiking in the summer. He enjoys travel and has visited most states in the U.S. He also enjoys listening to the Grateful Dead and went to several of their concerts, including the last two in St. Louis!
Tom's other hobbies include geology--you should see his rock collection--and music. He plays a clarinet and guitar and considered becoming a music major but chose engineering instead. Tom also enjoys surfing the 'net and writing computer programs.
