Producer's
Note

Dear Participant:
The vision was set even before I won the title of International Mr. Bootblack 2003 at International Mr. Leather, in Chicago this past year... and this was to create a venue were there was contest without a leather title attached to it and an enviorment where education was the key source along with a Bootblack contest. Only! Pacific West Bootblack is created with all this in mind. A stepping stone and a feeder contest for that one individual whose heart and soul, as well as there there lust for competition, translates to their art form. This contest is formed with a scoring method that has the ballot system in mind but also has a professional adjudication factor built in to it. Hopefully one day others will follow this and eventually make the change and difference as we have.
Whether you wish to be involved as a Contestant, a Sponsor, a Vendor, an Advertiser, part of my dedicated Staff, or just as an Attendee, we welcome your participation!

- Richie Chameroy,
  International Mr. Bootblack 2003,
Pacific West Mr. Bootblack 2004 Producer

Scoring - Pacific West Mr. Bootblack - Contestants shall be scored by panel of five judges in the categories and points outlined below:
Interview - Max 40 points - Each Contestant will be pre-screened by an adjudication staff. Contestants will be asked questions based upon their applications and their own abilities. They will be asked what they bring to their communities as Bootblacks, to our leather communities, and various other questions about themselves. The Interview shall take approximately 10 minutes per Contestant, with approximately 5 minute break between.

Social Skills, Originality & Presentation - Max 60 points - Each Contestant will have exactly 1 hour to complete the setting up of his own area, shining or greasing a pair of boots, and completing the finishing touches. If a contestant goes over the 60 minute time allotment, a 1-point penalty reduction is assessed for every minute over. While a score of zero is possible because of penalties, negative scores are not. No "bonus" points are given to a Contestant who finishes before the 1 hour limit. Scoring is performed by the Judges.

"Ballot Shines" - Maximum 100 points - Each Contestant will have stations at the Vendor Mart and will bootblack on Saturday afternoon and most of Sunday. The public is invited to vote by giving the ballots that they hold to their preferred bootblack, and at the end of each day, those collected ballots must be given to the Tallymaster by the Contestant. Ballots are given to anyone who has purchased an event Package, and only one ballot per paid participant is distributed. Points are distributed according to the percentage of TOTAL ballots cast by the public.

Onstage Presence" - Maximum 50 points - Each contestant will be presented onstage to introduce himself to the audience and briefly describe his background or interest in bootblacking, while wearing the attire that bests represents his image of a bootblack. He will be judged on appearance and on a question asked by the Emcee while onstage. Scoring is performed by the Judges.
If only one contestant competes for the title, he must achieve a 70% score from the judges in order to qualify as having "won" the title.

The Winning Contestant shall be selected by their winning total scores from the panel of judges. The Tallymaster shall determine the total scores, and present the names of the winner for the emcee to announce at the contest. Should there be only ONE contestant in each of the two categories, he must garner 70% of the maximum possible to have been considered as "winning" the title. The winning contestants is expected to compete for International Mr. Bootblack title on May 27 ~ 31, 2004 in Chicago, IL, USA.

The Pacific West Mr. Bootblack 2004 Poster - was designed by Rod Wood. Inspired by the simple lines of the original Macintosh [sometimes known as the "Picasso"] logo, the Pacific West Mr. Bootblack 2004 logo allows the mind to complete the image of a pair of boots by using only three curved lines.

Contest Staff

Judges - - The judges were selected because they represent a cross-section of the Community. There are male and female, of differing ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds, but all have one thing in common - they are all considered leaders in the Community. All have won titles of their own and know what it's like to be on the other side of the judging table. Their job is to determine who best represents them and the Bootblack Community at large. Because of this, the interview section of the contest is done privately with only the contestant, the judges, and only contest staff as deemed necessary for the smooth operation of the contest. The contestant is expected to be honest with his answers, and the judges and staff are expected to keep anything discovered during the interview strictly private. One judge is designated as "Head Judge", and may act as moderator for the others.

Emcee - This is the person who gets the most stage time. He or she introduces the judging panel, the contestants and acknowledges the presence of major personalities in the audience. The emcee may pose one or more questions onstage to the contestants.

Tallymaster - Responsible for an accurate count of the judges scores. Determines the winners from those totals. Delivers the winners' names to the emcee for announcing at the end of the contest. Experience with numbers and spreadsheets is important.

Den Guy - Either a current or former titleholder, the Den Guy (sometimes known as "Den Dad" or "Den boy") primarily provides emotional support for the contestants. After all, he's been through it himself. He is also responsible for making sure that the contestants get to the interview room and introducing each contestant to the judging panel.

Judges' boy - Working behind-the-scenes, this person is responsible for distributing and collecting scoresheets, as well as assorted other tasks as required. The Judges' boy is allowed in the room during an interview, but may not participate in questioning the contestants. A specific gender is not an inherent characteristic of the title "Judge's boy".
