Aboriginal Deaths in South Australia
How many deaths per year could be expected in a group of people of the same size and age-structure as the Aboriginal community in South Australia? The answer according to DHS statistician Graeme Tucker is 29 male and 24 female deaths (ie 1 a week). In fact there are actually 70 and 56 respectively (ie 1 every 3 days). This is probably an under-estimate because not all Aboriginal deaths are recorded as such, particularly in urban areas. For the technically minded, Graeme used indirect age-sex standardisation and showed that the SMR (standardized mortality ratio) for Aboriginal people is approximately 2.4 in South Australia. Aboriginal mortality rates are significantly higher in all age groups than for non-Aboriginal people. Of particular concern are the very high  rates among Aboriginal males in rural and remote areas of the state.

Indigenous Public Service Network
Attention All South Australian Public Sector Indigenous Employees
The Commissioner for Public Employment recently launched an Indigenous
Employment Strategy for the SA Public Sector.  The four outcomes to be
achieved throughout the term of the strategy are:
* The SA public sector is an employer of choice for Indigenous South
Australians
* Increased employment of Indigenous South Australians in all agencies
and at all levels within the SA public sector
* Indigenous public sector employees will be actively supported and
encouraged to develop to their fullest potential
* Effective evaluation and reporting on Indigenous employment
To ensure involvement from all Indigenous people across the South
Australian public sector, the Office for the Commissioner for Public
Employment is coordinating a register of all SA public sector Indigenous
employees.
As a result of this register a South Australian Public Sector Indigenous
Employees Information Network will be formed.
The network will provide up to date information on what's happening with
the Strategy, functions, forums, developmental opportunities and any
general information that may be of interest.
If you are a SA public sector employee who identifies as an Indigenous
Australian, you are invited to participate in the network by completing
the registration form that can be found at:
