Yahoo Messenger has become the playground of what we in chat call the "hackers". They use bot programs and disrupter scripts to cause Y Pager errors and disconnecting you from the room and messenger. The reason this occurs is because you cannot run two messengers at the same time basically. But many should begin to understand some pretty easy facts first: FOR EXAMPLE...when you download a messenger..about 80% of that module is within your computer on your hard disc: The balance of 20% remains on the Yahoo Server Computers..ie..(your friends lists and preferences and/or My Yahoo and so on): So when these "hackers" run their bots it's really against that 20% within Yahoo Server Computers and not technically against your computer system: Even though they can disrupt service thay cannot permently harm your system without an actual doorway opened by you ( such as an IM or PM or an attachment download or any other download procedure)

Some of the bots they use need "colors activated" on your system to work: Colors are fun and I do miss seeing my friends colors..but in Messenger under appearances you can add a check mark to "always use my fonts and colors.."" then apply and then ok: THIS WILL GIVE YOU SOME PROTECTION FROM THE COLOR BOTS.

Another bot they use is the "sounds bot"..which for it to work your sounds must be enabled..I use to like all the sounds..BUT, once again the "hackers" have discovered the sound bots: Thus, you can again goto your messenger under sounds and uncheck "enable sounds"..THIS NOW STOPS THE SOUND BOT PROGRAMS.

A backdoor exists within messenger: Yahoo is trying to repair it..but as of 1/20/02 it still remains open: This door is within your Messenger under privacy..and is the permanent jail box: To hold back this bot doorway delete everyone in that box and do not use it again: You still can ignore anyone you desire when in a chat room by highlighting their name and clicking the ignore (iggy) button. Sadly this is one more item we users now miss.

IN PRIVACY: For better (but not perfect security)..but it helps..put a check mark in ignore anyone not on friends list ..and do not allow users to see me on line..all others on that tab page remain with no checks.

CHAT TAB: Check ignore invites and uncheck enable archiving: Another sad one is uncheck "Tell me when others enter the room..) uncheck it also: Maybe one day Yahoo will build a good tight and secure messenger:

But, for now it's up to you the user to make choices to make chatting more secure rather than more open to the creeps we call "hackers": Whom simply use bots found on black web sites because most of them could not build their own if their life depended upon it: New Beta is out..WORKS GREAT IF THE PREFERENCES ARE SET PROPERLY FOR SECURE USAGE.

HERE IS MY LAST THOUGHT UPON MESSENGER: Messenger has many glitches that Yahoo Server Computers fail upon: Many times screen scroll, lag, chat error, script error, and many more are not caused by "hackers"...SO DO NOT GIVE THEM THE CREDIT FOR IT...Respond not and they loose the fun and recognition for their attempted actions. 		YAHOO...NOW INFORMING USERS THAT THEIR NEW MESSENGER IS NOT FOR ALL SYSTEMS.. Customers running Windows 98 or ME should consider the feature-limited version of Messenger. Your system may operate more efficiently with a feature-limited version of Messenger, which utilizes less memory and processing power. YAHOO FURTHER NOW INFORMS USER THAT IF THEY DID PUT IN THE NEW 6.0 UNIT..THEY MUST PROPERLY UNINSTALL IT BEFORE GOING BACK TO A UNIT THAT WILL WORK: YAHOO ALSO APOLOGISES THAT THEY KNOW OF NO WAY TO STOP THE AUTO UPDATER...we know differently ..After you have set all your preferences..close messenger and restart..then close it..Now go to My Computer.. CLICK NEXT AGREE WITH CHECK MARK TO YAHOO AND THEN CLICK NEXT CLICK NEXT AGAIN CLICK NEXT ONCE MORE YAHOO MESSENGER NOW INSTALLING When it comes up Yahoo may bring up a box or two asking what you want to do....READ CAREFULLY TO UNCHECK ALL THE BOXES RIGHT...such as MAKE YAHOO MAIL DEFAULT...NO WAY SO BE CAREFULL IF AND WHEN THESE APPEAR........ SETTING THE PREFERENCES: General Tab Uncheck all except...open web links and auto sign in click apply Alert and sounds Uncheck the box...click on each item one at a time uncheck and when done click apply appearance...set as you desire Archive I choose NOT SAVE ANY...THEN APPLY CALLING AND AUDIO SET AS YOU LIKE OR LEAVE AS IS EXCEPT REMOVE CHECK FROM HEADPHONES UNLESS YOU ALWAYS USE HEADPHONES. 	Remove that annoying Windows login prompt I have no login prompt when Windows boots up. When that username and password dialog box isn't necessary, you can "remove" it. Open the Passwords applet in your Control Panel, select the 'Change Passwords' tab, then press the 'Change Windows Password' button. In the 'Old Password' field, enter your password. Select the 'New Password' field and press ENTER (with no new password typed in). You'll see the confirmation dialog box pop up. The next time you restart Windows, the login prompt will not be there.
