Review – Ink Mill demo
Ink Mill is another band that joined us in November and, like a good vintage, has been mellowing on the Sounds from the Street library shelf for a couple of months.
Live, though, they have been rocking about town at venues like the Houie, the Brit and IDs and are currently shopping this package around for more work.
This demo is great! Using old separation production techniques with different instruments in each speaker, this untypical 4-piece from Newtown has been described as similar to Beasts of Bourbon, Jon Spencer, Nick Cave, Scientists and Lubricated Goat. I hear more of the Rickenbacker-influenced/based bands in Ink Mill, especially in the jingle-jangle of Mow Up Doll, the opener.
Track two, Ennui Treat continues this setting with a very sudden and radio-unfriendly ending. Then the Nick Cave influence comes through in The Road Song, with deep-down vocals and lingering organ-sounding keys. Muzzle completes the set with the same-but-not-quite feel, complete with the return of the Ric-O-Sounds.
Ink Mill will go places,
and this demo will help only if it were upgraded to CD. Still, ««««
is pretty good for a demo tape!
