My name is not important. I live alone... Alone in the wide plains of this world. I don't know why I have to travel this world, but I must go where the winds take me. They call out to me as if they tell me what is needed of me. How can this suffering end?...
Act 1: The Genesis
I had traveled many days through an endless desert. Although I am exhausted, I travel on without stopping. I left from an old ruin that was burned to the ground. I don't remember how the ruins had burned down, nor do I remember how I ended up in the desert. I just remember a voice calling to me.
Please help us! We need your help! Go east!
And so I traveled east. I had walked until the sun reached down behind me. I had just paused for a moment as I heard a faint breath close by. I noticed a pile of rubble to the right of me. In the rubble, a hand was sticking out from the top. I couldn't let that person die, so I cleared the debris. I couldn't believe my eyes. A young girl was buried in this mess. Was she the voice I heard? I couldn't leave her in this desert to rot, so I carried her as far as I could through the night...
I made it to a small town. Was I dreaming? How could I just walk through a scorching desert with no water in just one day? There were so many questions in my head that I wanted answered. I had went into what seemed to be an abandoned house. I left her on a pile of sheets that were thrown on the floor. It would be comfortable and easy for her rest on. I decided to look around in this house for at least some water. Sure enough, I found a water pump in the back along with a bucket. I drew water into the bucket and took it inside. When I stepped over the threashold, I felt something. It felt like someone was in the house. I put the bucket down and went upstairs into an attic. There was a family huddled together in fear. I tried to talk to them but they didn't seem to hear me. It was as if they wer afraid of something else. I turned around and saw a dark figure in the shadows. I was prepared to protect this family and rushed at this man. Oddly, I went through him. What was this all about??? He had a giant sword and seemed ready to kill...
I was still standing in what I believe was the kitchen. Was I dreaming again? Bucket in hand, I went along with what I was doing. I took a sheet that was discarded on the other side of the pile and doused it with water. I wrung the water out so it was nice and moist. Afterwards, I wrapped the young girl in it. She was very hot when I carried her. I hoped that this would cool her down and give some moisture to her body. I even put a sheet on her brow as well. When I finished, I went to look upstairs where I was dreaming. To my surprise, I noticed a pile of bones where the family in my dream was. I looked on in horror as I now know this dream was real. This family was murdered by a dark, cold-hearted man. I decided to bury them in the morning... for respect...
The morning came and I had finished laying the family to rest. I stood there in silence wondering why... Why did this happen? What wrong did they do? I wondered as well as why I saw this... This vision of them? Will I ever find out?
I went inside the house to find the young girl awake and drinking water. I was relieved to see she was alive. I suppose I caught her attention because she was surprized to see me. "I'm sorry..." she said to me.
"Why? You are safe now," I answered. She paused for a moment as she started to remember.
"Thank you... for saving me. But did you see anyone else?" she asked me in concern. I couldn't answer her. She was all I found and if there was someone else, they may have died. In silence, she knew what my answer to her was. "I understand. Where are we?"
"I don't know. It is just a house..." I paused for a moment as I went outside. There was nothing but silence in the whole town. I didn't like it at all. The young girl went outside as well. She seemed a bit scared about it.
"Please stay here," I told her. She nodded as I left to inspect the town. There was no sign of life here. I then wondered... Was that family just a portion of what happened to them? One man couldn't have slain a town... Unless he was not alone. I decided to leave now. I went back for the young girl so we could leave. "Let's go," I said to her. She agreed and we continued east. While we were traveling, she began to talk to me.
"What's your name?"
"I don't have one..."
"Everyone has a name. My name is Anya. What do people call you?"
"...I don't know..."
"Do you want me to give you a name?"
I was never given anything in my life. Or at least what I know of. I nodded as she started thinking.
"How about... Ruben?" she asked me. I thought about it for a while. I smiled at her as I began to speak...
"I like it very much. Thank you," I said. It was a name that I could be used to until the end of time...
