If you're thinking about getting a rat, the most important thing is to make sure you choose a rat that seems healthy and happy - with no missing fur patches and no sores or discharges.  If at all possible try and get at least two rats so they always have
company, always make sure they are the same sex or you will end up with a lot of little mouths to feed.  Both male and female rats make great pets, although unneutered males can be more smelly, but both sexes are just as friendly an playful.
Cages
The bigger the cage the better!  Rats need as much room to run around as possible, so always try and get the biggest cage you can afford.  Wire cages are the best to use although aquariums can be used as long as there is enough ventilation.  Rat cages can be very expensive to buy so here's an easy guide to make your own.

Make sure you fill your cage with lots of
toys for your rats to play with as they get easily bored
Feeding
You'll be able to get a dry food mix from your pet shop, try and get one designed specially for rats.  As well as dry food it's good to give your rat some fruit and vegetables - any type will do they're not fussy.  Every rat needs a treat now and again, you can buy special treats like yogurt drops, dried fruit mix and chocolate drops my rats also love eating grass - free and tasty, what more could you want!  As rats teeth constantly grow it's important to give them something to chew on, most pet shops will sell wood blocks which will keep their teeth under control.
