I am getting about 90km before the first light comes on for fuel that is around town takin it to about 8,500 rpm all the time. and on the highway i will get about 100km to the 1/2 take light does this sound normal to you guys??? i think it is using a bit too much.. ?? also in about 4th gear at about 2800rpm till about 4000rpm it feels really dead. and off the line i have to rev to about 4,500 to get a nice launch and still somtimes boggs down..

I am guessing that i have to adjust the pins someone told me that there is a pin which you can move and it will give it more go at lower speed but not as much up the top etc...

or what i am guessing it is just running a little rich. i mean it has only 15,000km so it can't be much major.....

any ideas would be apreciated...

thanks

Sounds about the same as mine, 100klms and the light comes on. Need to give it plenty to get a good start at the lights. I thought maybe because I was a fat bastard at 120kg that it struggles. Maybe a few of the leaner riders might get a bit more out of her. I have just clocked up 18,000 klms and I have had her since 6,000klms and performance hasnt change. I did get the bike shop to lean her off a little for me cause it was spluttering below 6000rpm when i opened her up.

"got my bike" and "performance data on the across" might be two threads on this board that can help you. Check them out. There's been lots of talk lately trying to sort out these issues.

My fuel economy and performance got better when I leaned off the mixture by lowering the needle one position. When you mess with the needle it generally does not make any big difference to the highest rev band, as the needle slide & needle is well out of the way by then & the main jet is doing all of the fuel metering.

The worst my bike did was first light at about 70 kms. Nowadays it's more like 115, (both figures with a fair bit of fanging).

Nathan recently had exactly the same prob as you guys and has sorted most of it out. Check the other recent threads as well, as I am pretty sure there's been more talk about it than just the 2 mentioned above. Try "fake ram holes" too for more carby info.

good luck

Sounds like your running a bit rich their Corrolling, I get 220km before i need reserve, so normaly about 110 when the orange fuel light comes on, and 200 when the red turns on. This is mostly freeway riding though, as I tend not to take the bike into the city very much(mostly because if i go to the city its to have a few drinks  ).

As for power, the bike is not bad between 2,500 and 6,000. After that it takes off, and I am running the needles at no 3, though i suspect the guides will need changing soon as im about to hit 35,000km.

I think i have netted the problem down after readig posts for about 3 days... i think i am running a bit rich due to the fact that between 3-7000 it seems to slug then bang it goes... so i am going to run the neddle a little leaner and see how i go.. Also i noticed on the back of my l plate which is behind the exhust a lot of black carbon @#%$ and also at the end of the exhust which if it was a carbie car i would say it was running too rich.. however i have not looked at the carbie settings yet i will tonight. but can anyone tell me what shoudl i do if i find that the carb setting is already on number 2?? 1 more leaner then standard would you still knock it own to one or would you start to look at things like the float levelwhich i read somewhere else..

Has anyone done the drilling of the exhust pipe i saw it on a page and they said that it would improve performance beyond 14,ooo rpm??? I was going to do that but i undertand it may use a little more fuel. I don't care because once i run it leaner it would counteract this. but just if the bike goes better and by how much ???? I can live with a higher fuel bill if the bike has better performance but if it uses more fuel and goes no better then i will be a little anoyed...

Thanks in advance peter

I tried all the needle settings in mine, shouldn't hurt too much to tinker. If you find it on #2 to begin with, try #1, why not? You should check float levels anyway, make sure they're at whatever the spec says, something like 20mm. Make sure your oil level is spot on as that can make a lot of crap come out of the exhaust too if it is too high. Whatever it takes to get rid of that flat spot.

I think carbon is always gonna be there for the across owner a little, especially if they are in the city and not frequently taking it all the way thru the rev range. Spoke to a bikestore mech. once who said every one they saw come in would spit tons of shiit out the pipe when revved at standstill because they don't get enough of what they like in the city. I think my needles on #2 is perhaps slightly lean as it takes a little more warming from cold to wake up, but it helps and I never get any performance decrease when the bike is really hot - which is something helpful for those city crawls when your fan is going every minute. Needless to say you should always tune the engine for operating temp, not when the engine's cool.

I dunno about the drilled baffle but all I can say is that on mixed city/highway with my quite open (loud as hell) can I am now getting better fuel economy than I ever did with the stock exhaust. Recently achieved 20 km/litre on a night time burn through the northern beaches and city - a bit of start-stop, a bit of cruising. (ie 240km/tank).
