Aussie Sports

Sports- The National Past-time! Australians love their sport and nothing better fits the profile of a weekend better than playing and watching sports. Australia has it's own branch of unique sports as well as adapting the globally recognised ones such as basketball, soccer, baseball and tennis. Winter is dominated by the footy codes. NRL (National Rugby League), AFL (Australian Football League), Rugby Union and soccer are the norms for the cold period. During the football hiatus, the searing heat of summer invites sports such as cricket, surfing, tennis, into the lifestyles of Australians.

AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL/ AFL
Australian Rules Football was first played in 1866 and has been played ever since. Australian Rules Football is a unique brand of football. It is played on an oval shaped field with goalposts at each end. (Two smaller posts called behind posts and two goal posts in between them). If the ball is kicked in between the two goal posts a goal (6 points) is scored. If the ball goes through a behind post one point is scored. At the match end the team with the most ponts is the winner.
Each game of Australian Rules Football is separated into 4 quarters, each lasting 20 minutes.
The ball used in Australian Rules is an oval ball. In day games the ball is coloured red, but during night games, the ball is coloured yellow to make it easier to see.
Both teams in Aussie Rules are allowed 18 players on the ground at all times.

CRICKET
Cricket although originally started in England, has become over the years Australia's game. Cricket could be compared to baseball, but instead is played on a round ground and on a pitch. The bat is flat on one side and ridged on the other. The object of the game is to score the most runs. Teams take turns in bowling/fielding and batting. Australia one the acclaimed Cricket World Cup in 1999.

NATIONAL RUGBY LEAGUE
National Rugby League is a football competition that runs in Australia during the winter months. Rugby League is a cross between rugby union and gridion. The object of the game is to ground the ball in the opponents in-goal to score tries and to kick the ball over the cross-bar to score goals. A Try (4 points) is scored when a player grounds the ball in his opponents in-goal. After scoring the try, a player from that team will attempt a conversion(2 points) which is a place kick from a spot directly from any point on the field in line where the ball was grounded. A Goal is either a conversion after a try or a goal scored from the spot where the referee has awarded a penalty.
The team that has the most number of points at the end of play is the winner The game is played over 2 x 40 minute halves and is made up of 2 teams of 13 players.
