Aussie Tucker 
Australian Food is unique from other cultures in the sense that there is no set theme
or taste to the wide variety of food. Aussies enjoy a good hearty meal, and love al fresco
dining- enjoying wonderful picturesque views of The Great Southern Land.
Below are the most common foods, with a brief description and picture.
DAMPER
Damper is an Australian side dish used to accompany a main meal.
It was originally with flour and water and kneaded in a similar way to a pizza dough
into a round shape. It was cooked in the coals of a campfire. Nowadays, ingriedients
such as self-raising flour or yeast are used to make the damper rise. Generally speaking, damper is
served with butter and makes a tasty side to a hearty stew.
ANZAC BISCUITS
Anzac Biscuits are a crisp, crunchy desert biscuit, that is named in honour of the World War
1 Heroes- The ANZACS (Australian & New Zealand Army Corps). Made with rolled oats,
coconut, flour, sugar, golden syrup, butter ANZAC bicuits or cookies as they are sometimes
known are the perfect snack food.
MEAT PIES
Meat pies are about as Aussie as it comes. Nothing goes better at a game of footy (whether it be
NRL or AFL- [see Aussie Sports section]) than a hot Meat pie with tomato sauce.
Meat pies are round are made of pastry and are filled with minced meat. Meat pies are usually 15cm in diameter
but can also come in family size or party size. Meat Pies nowadays come in a variety of flavours,
such as curry, vegetable and mexican, but traditionally it is just mince and pastry.
BILLY TEA
Billy Tea is tea that is made is a metal pot called a billy, that is heated over an open fire.
Water is brought to the boil over the flame and then the lid is removed and tea leaves are added.
Billy Tea is a great hot beverage for campers spending a chilly night in the outback.
LAMINGTONS
If you have a sweet-tooth then chances are lamingtons are the perfect dessert for you!
Lamingtons are quite simply, sponge cake dipped in chocolate icing and then rolled in coconut.
Variations have been made to the original concept with the some people adding cream and jam and
rolling the lamingtons up- nevertheless they still posess that unique flavour.
VEGEMITE
"We're growing stronger every week!" has always been Vegemite's catch cry, mainly because just
about every kid in Oz grew up with the taste of vegemite for breakfast, lunch and dinner!
Vegemite is a vegetable extract, and is primarily used as a spread on toast or bread
but can also be used as a flavouring in soups and casseroles. Vegemite has a distinctive salty
taste, and its this taste that makes Vegemite not-so popular with overseas visitors!
PAVLOVA
Pavlova is a large meringue dessert made from beaten egg whites and is
topped with whipped cream and an assortment of fruit. It was name after the
Russian Ballerina, Anna Pavlova who was touring Australia in the early 1900's.
GRANNY SMITH APPLES
Granny Smith Apples are very popular variety of apple in Australia- in both agricultural
and sales circles. Granny Smith Apples are sweet to taste. They are used frequently
as apples in desserts- because of their flavour.
