Start of Term Feast!
By
Dakota Tallfeather

We just had the Start of Term Feast, and though the Headmistresss speech had a somber tone, the dance itself certainly was a light affair! I had the pleasure of spending some time with a couple young ladies from two different houses and it was a blast talking to them! My view of Slytherin and Penshire has changed, even though I hadnt really thought bad things for either house. I felt the dances here at Hogwarts is a great way to meet and chat it up with students from other houses and getting to know other students better! Who would have guessed I would have found someone else who is a Survivor freak like me, I hope one day to be on the island! But, back to the danceI hear the next one is going to be the Halloween one and that is usually is great fun, I just hope the next time I am in there, I can hook-up with even more students as it would be even more fun! This was not my first dance, but it certainly had some memorable moments. Winks
Interview
By Ava Black

For this article I sat down with Kamron of Hufflepuff. I think you will find this interview enlightening and entertaining!

Ava: Kamron how do you like your new house?
Kamron: Well, I do like it but I did hear that Zoey bites people in their sleep. What a rumor that was! Lockhart has way to many pictures to give away I already have like 10 but besides all that it is going pretty good in there.

Ava: Have you made any good friends yet?
Kamron: Yes. I have made a few new friends most because I am their mentor. A new student I have met is a vampire and they really seem to be nice. Zoey, Cody Black and many others are nice as well. Hufflepuff is a great house for making friends.

Ava: Now, to the juicy part! I have heard a few rumors going around about you! Care to comment?
Kamron: There were some like the ones you started on the whole me holding hands with some girls at the dance and dancing with all most everyone there.

Ava: Yes, I recall those events. I heard you had several girlfriends as well!
Kamron: Well, yes I have had a few *Coughs*
Ava: Do they all know about this?
Kamron: Yes they have found out at the moment I went to Hufflepuff.
Ava: Well, they will after this article.
Kamron: Yea, I do, I think some do not, so yea!

Ava: So tell me how do you get along with Zoey Taylor?
Kamron: She bites people its very scary and other then that shes pretty nice. Shes a little crazy with Lockhart tho.

Ava: What about Professor Lockhart?
Kamron: Too many pictures! Zoey and I burned some at the feast but he had more the next day. He was even there when we got rid of them.

Ava: Do you have anything you would like to add to this interview?
Kamron: Yes, I'm sorry to all the Slytherins because I know its hard now that I have left and you guys better prove you don't need me by winning the cups again.
Halloween!

As October 31st is fast approaching this author would like to know what are you going to be for Halloween? The choices are growing slim and of course the well-thought-out student or staff has already purchased their disguise! What are the favorite choices this year? You might think Wizard or Witch but that is not so. Too much like everyday life methinks! Most say Pirate, or Jedi. I think Darth Vader is a prime choice as well. I saw a few have chosen Fair maiden or Ariel the mermaid. So whatever you pick just make sure you do it quick ~ as the holiday is just around the corner!

Halloween around the World.
By Lily Merlin

As many of you know, all Hallows Eve is upon us, or as most of you know it is, Halloween.   But did you know about Halloween in other places in the world? What they do and their traditions. I have searched around and found some of these places.
Now in our neck of the woods here in England, Halloween in the past was known as Mischief Night, and boy were they mischievous! People would take the hinges off other people's doors, and take the door, then throw it into the pond, or take it a long way away! Villagers would lock up their cats for fear that elves might steal them! Children were told not to sit in circles of flowers where fairies had danced and they might be stolen! Seems like we have quite a few thieves! Did you know that black cats here were once considered lucky, and white cats were unlucky! Money was also given out instead of candy! Hmm that sounds nice!   Halloween was also dubbed Nutcracker Night, and Snap Apple Night. Rightly named so because families would sit in front of their hearths and roast nuts and eat apples. Stories were told and games were played.
Halloween in Ireland started in an odd way, thousands of years ago a tribe of farmers known as the Celts knew that the sun helped their crops grow, but when Autumn came the sun began to fade and they believed that the sun would become Winter's prisoner for six months, so they held a festival on October 31st and prayed for the sun to return safely and come back as shining as brightly as ever. Halloween in Ireland was also known as Samhain Festival, during this time you took your livestock from the pastures to the shelters. Also it was thought that the veil between our world and the other world would become thin and ghosts and spirits would be free and head to the homes for warmth. On the Eve the Celts built bonfires in memory of their departed ancestors and left food and drink on their tables overnight for eating by the ghosts.
In Japan Halloween is celebrated as the O-Bon Festival, which celebrates the memory of dead relatives. Food and water is placed in front of the photos of the dead. O-Bon gets its name from the Sanskrit word for 'to hang upside down'. Which refers to the legend about a Buddhist monk who in deep meditation was able to see his long-dead mother hanging upside down in the Buddhist equivalent of the underworld, which was her punishment for eating meat in her lifetime. On the first day of O-Bon people decorate their loved one's graves with fruit, cakes, and lanterns.
In Rome Halloween is celebrated as Parentalia, dedicated to honoring dead family members. These times were not spooky to the Roman Citizens, but rather a time for feasting, quiet and being during introspective. Also during these times all temples were closed, and
weddings were forbidden. People visited their parents' and other relatives' graves, bringing offerings such as milk, wine, honey, oil, and spring water. Some brought sacrificial blood from the bodies of black animals. They decked the graves with roses and violets. "Dining with the dead" at the grave site, the celebrant would offer the traditional greeting and farewell of the holiday: "Salve, sancte parens", "Hail, holy ancestor."

Our Deepest Apologies...

The Student Council would like to take a moment to apologize to each the Headmistress, Professor Ripley, and the general student body for our failure to complete the layout of the Owl Gazette last month and for not informing the administration that we would not be able to do so at the time it became apparent. We're not here to make excuses, so we only wish to extend a general apology to all those affected by the mistake. Professor Ripley, we're sorry that the job was dumped on you and we thank you for all the time and effort you put into it on our behalfs. After realizing the trouble we put everyone else through, we have tried this month not to make the same mistake and to plan ahead for problems that could easily be avoided. Once again, thank you for your patience with us and rest assured we will do everything possible to avoid another situation as which occured.
