Sharmila is a disciple of Guru Kelucharan Mahapatra and one of the leading dancers in the Odissi Dance form. She started dancing from the age of eight years. She has studied Abhinaya from Sm Kalanidhi Narayan and Mahari style of dancing from the last two surviving temple dancers of Orissa - Shashimoni Mahari & Parashmoni Mahari. She heads Odissi Vision & Movement Centre - a cultural institution which promotes Odissi Dance and music through research, training and performances. In the last five years Sharmila has been recognized as one of the finest upcoming young choreographers in India. She works towards the fulfillment of contemporary sensibilities and through her research work, strives to enrich and broaden the horizons of Odissi Classical Dance. |
