The Ohio Valley Marine Corps League Detachment No. 882 had its beginning in April 1994, much like the Marine Corps in 1775 in Tun Tavern.  With a gathering of former Marines having a few drinks at the American Legion Post No. 4 in Sewickley, it was discussed that there are a sufficient number of Marines in the local area to start a Marine Corps League Detachment.  The men began seeking out former Marines at all of the American Legions, VFW Posts and local bars to find the required 15 former Marines to start a Detachment.  By May of 1994 we were 15 in number, including one former Woman Marine and a Charter.  Jim Dempsey accepted the position of Commandant with Bob Wagner as Sr. Vice, Fred Baird as Jr. Vice, Joe D'Archangelo as Adjutant/Paymaster, Wade McKenney as Sergeant at Arms, Gary Farole as Chaplain and Marilou Farole as Historian.  These officers were sworn in by the then Southwest Division Vice Commandant Tom Justin.  Shortly thereafter the Detachment secured uniforms and flags and started a color guard.  The Detachment was asked to participate in parades and military funeral services.  In 1996, the Detachment attended its first State Convention to find out what this "Band of Brothers" was all about.  We learned the ropes, grew in numbers, and quickly became a Detachment to be reckoned with.  The Detachment is now approximately 60 members in strength, has won two First Place Americanism Awards at the State level and a Second place at the National level.  The Detachment publishes a monthly newsletter, "Jarhead News", to keep the members informed of all activities; some of which include:  Parades, Funeral Services, Ceremonial Firing Squads, VAVS, Toys for Tots, Rifle and Pistol Shooting Teams, Family Picnic, Bus Trips and Tours, Christmas Parties, Highway Cleanup, and Community Service Programs.  We are proud to represent the United States Marine Corps as the Few, the Proud, the Ohio Valley Marines in our community.
