Meet Monazir Khan
It is not certain that Monazir Khan will run for EVP
in 2005, but in case he does.......Do not vote for him. Here’s why:
Khan has not been a TA or GA for many years
now. He has made GSEUhis main source of income. Should
members’ dues go to funding his over-extended stay as a graduate
student?
In 1999, Khan, as president of GSEU, allegedly
used members’ dues to pay for part of his rent and the repair of his automobile.
During negotiations in the late 1990s, Monazir
Khan paid himself as “chief negotiator” even when negotiations
were halted for four months and no negotiation team meetings were held.
As President of the GSEU in the late 90s, Khan
along with Kathleen Sims helped orchestrate a merger with CWA 1112 and
1104. While one may debate the merits of the merger, it was clearly bad
that as part of the merger agreement, Sims and Khan extended their terms of
office and gave themselves raises while brokering a dues increase for
members. Around the same time, Khan as chair of the GSEU's Decision Making
Body helped remove Buffalo AVP Michael Rozendal and Buffalo chief steward
Laurie Ousley (after they had pressed charges against Khan's questionable
use of members' dues). Khan and cronies also refused to recognize the duly
elected officer of Stony Brook and instead appointed Ramon del Castillo.
This suggests that Khan and Sims' primary interest has been in maintaining
their own incomes rather than maintaining member representation.
Several officers in CWA 1104 have commented on
the poor work ethics of Monazir Khan.
In 2001 Khan hung up the phone on TAs from
Buffalo’s English department when they asked for the union’s
help in a labor dispute. Khan refused to help, advise, or even talk
to the members involved.
After the merger, SUNY decided that it
didn’t need to recognize GSEU in its merged state. Khan was never
able to get SUNY to recognize GSEU/CWA1104: Did he even try to get
recognition, or was he happy to have this as an excuse for not filing
grievances or meeting with the state? Recognition was not regained
until early 2003.
SUNY Buffalo designed a Teaching Associate
program that made many members eligible for an additional year of funding
at the minimum stipend (far better than teaching as an adjunct). Without
even consulting with Buffalo members, Khan, Kniffin, O’Gorman,
and Sims (the DMB without any Buffalo officers) voted down the offer even
though it would have been a great benefit to Buffalo members.
After CWA 1104’s Executive Board began
questioning Khan’s ethics and making it more difficult for him to
misuse members’ dues, Khan participated in a campaign to undo the
merger with 1104 and 1112.
All of GSEU should hope that Monazir Khan is not
running for EVP. For Binghamton’s sake, let us hope he does not again
run for Binghamton Business Agent.
