Henry County, Virginia --  Marrowbone Creek

William MOORE (I) - HENRY COUNTY, VIRGINIA --He identified himself as William MOORE (I) of Guliford County, North Carolina when he paid Personal Property Tax in 1778 in Henry County. In 1779, in a deed from George HAMILTON to Alexander MOORE, William MOORE (I) of the State of North Caroina, County of Guilford, is identified as the father of Alexander MOORE. This property is 250 acres on Marrowbone Creek near a branch which divides it from Jesse CHANDLER. Witnesses were Joseph ANTHONY, Alexander McKEEN, and Hugh McKEEN. The land was on the south side of Marrowbone Creek adj. Haracane Branch and "Hughey Maccain." On April 1779 William MOORE (I) was a witness with Alex. McKEEN and Thomas HAMILTON to deed of Henry MAYS to Abraham MAYS his son. Paid Personal Property Tax in 1780.

I do not know what happened to Alexander MOORE (brother to William MOORE II) the son of William MOORE. He appears to have moved away. No evidence of sale of land or death was found with the settlement of the estate of William MOORE (II). It was necessary for his Executors to first record the inventory of the estate of William MOORE (I). This estate account is dated 6 December 1811 and covers the years 1807-1810. Enumerated are bonds due from Peter GARLAND, Thomas DIX & Company, and Joseph WILLIAMS. An inventory is filed at June Court in 1811 by Robert ANDERSON, Thomas JAMERSON and David MULLINS. Included are Negros Bob, Dick, Phillis, Tom, Agga, Tammy, and Sterling, 5 horses, wagon, still, livestock and furniture valued at $2,980.00. The testamentary records indicate that some of the named slaves were transferred to the estate of the younger William MOORE (II) who bequeathed them by name to his children.

Much evidence suggests that William MOORE (I) was married to Margaret HUDSPETH...research on-going....

Subject: (1741-1747) Amelia County VA Tax Lists

These tax records confirm that William Moore (I) of Amelia lived near James Moore, and general county court house records show that both of them had some sort of association with Richard Randolph. This is also the county where Ralph Hudspeth, Jr. lived before he moved south. Another neighboring family was that of John Mayes. So, once again, there seems to be a good probability that William Moore who married Margaret Hudspeth lived in Amelia County in the 1740s. He and Margaret Moore both witness a deed in 1748.
