When you begin training
in karate the colour of your belt (obi) is white. The obi is not a device
for keeping your trousers up. It is there to show your 'rank'. It is worn
in a particular way which must be learned as part of the first grade - 10th
kyu (red belt).
1.
Firstly find the exact centre of the belt. Position the centre of the belt
2 inches below the naval - in line with the waist-band of the gi bottom.
5.
This is how the belt should look if you have followed stages 1 to 4 correctly.
2.
Pass the belt around the back, and cross it left over right so the ends swap
in your hands.
3.
Now the belt crosses left over right again in front at the centre.
4.
The end that has crossed in front now passes behind both layers of the belt,
so that it now hangs on the right as in picture 5.
6.
Now the right hand end passes over the left and ties through in a knot. Pull
the knot tight.
7.
The finished belt should look like this, with the ends being equal in length.
If shodan or above, the dan stripes should finish on the right, so start with
them on the left.
