| Blog This is my anti-myspace website. If you don't find the information about me that you're looking for, just hit me up and ask 4.4.08 We showed up bright and early today, but couldn't pull the tarp until 10:15. We worked incredibly hard to get the field in playing condition, but by 11:30, I got word from the GM that the game had been cancelled and that we would play a doubleheader tomorrow. We continued working towards playability for another 45 minutes, but had to cover again at 12:15, when it started raining again and continued for the rest of the day. I gave most of my crew a half day and they were certainly appreciative to be able to leave at 1:00. I kept John on hand, and we picked up our new infield reel mower, the Toro 1600. Now, the only piece of equipment from my new fleet that I do not have is my sprayer. We still got out of work relatively early, and checked out at 4:30. I've since come home and pretty much done nothing but lay in bed or eat. I'm certainly not looking forward to it, but I have to fire an employee for the very first time tomorrow morning. 4.3.08 Well, today was my first opening day as the head groundskeeper of a professional baseball field. But not only was it MY first opening day, it was also the first opening day game at any level of the minor leagues this year, with a 2:28 PM first pitch at about 57 degrees. I was rather disappointed by the county executives comments before her ceremonial first pitch. But everyone else in the county was overwhelmingly appreciative and gracious for the quality field that my crew and I put together for opening day, especially considering the awful weather and new construction. I felt suprisingly calm at all times until the game actually started. That was the only time in which I was nervous, hoping that there would be no bad hops or injuries. Following the game, I spoke with most of the infielders, as well as the coaches and the starting pitcher. All were extremely happy with the field, and look forward to the improvements I hope to make by the next homestand. I was very proud to hear how happy the pitcher was with the game mound. I don't remember the last time I've felt this mentally and physically exhausted. 3.23.08 Happy Easter! Continuing to reflect on our loss of good friend Dave Mitchell. Today is probably the last day in a very long time to have a day off work. Decided against going home for the weekend. Partly because I wanted to be able to relax rather than drive 5.5 hours each direction. And partly because I hope to make the trip home for Dave's funeral. 3.14.08 This afternoon, we lost a great person in Dave Mitchell. His F-16 jet crashed during combat training and he was unable to survive. He leaves behind his wife of nearly two years. Their anniversary would have been on April 1. He also leaves behind his unborn son, for whom he was incredibly excited and proud to be having. Please say a prayer for Dave, as well as for his family, especially his wife and son. I grew up with Dave back in Amherst. It was with Dave and Kris that I made my first out of state roadtrip to Woodstock for five days. Dave went to Bowling Green, but often made the two hour trip down to Columbus to visit me and Brad and Mike. I was fortunate enough to spend one last day with Dave while in Phoenix for my STMA conference in January. Dave, we'll miss you buddy. |
