Word Traps

[ 45-fun kakurenbo omake 2 ]

Sean has barely had the newly-installed phone line for a week when his desktop mascot announces a call.

At first, he is apprehensive; he certainly never gave his contact number to anyone except his grandfather and to that guy who asked for it or else he wouldn't deliver the materials (Sean remembers his name is "Dread", a manacing name, but it could easily be "Fred" or "Bread"). This reaction quickly makes way for curiosity, and he peers into the window that announces the trace number. He quickly logs into a satellite unit, which reveals the exact coordinates of the caller's location. Finally satisfied, he presses the 'connect' button and grins at the screen.

"Hey, Harry!" he greets. "How are you?"

Harry Gamble sits before the screen impassively, but Sean can see he is mildly annoyed. At his right corner of the monitor, there is a tea set next to him. "The contact number you have given me is incorrect," he says.

"It's only for an emergency," Sean tells him, and at the mild twitch on Harry's mouth, he goes on helpfully, "In case something bad happens? Like if I fall off a building? Or if I get trapped in a cave? Or if I get killed?"

"If I remember correctly," Harry retorts gracefully, "we both got trapped in a cave for three days and you never once called that number."

"It was out of range," Sean replies breezily. "Why'd you track me down?" Then, warily, he asks, "What made you track me down?"

Harry raises an eyebrow; he is still obviously derisive about Sean Firestone's paranoia. "I thought it would amuse you to learn that I have fought a match against Kouya Marino."

For a second, Sean is rendered speechless and it is only through Harry's smirk which he unsuccessfully tries to hide behind his teacup that he realizes that his mouth is open. "You challenged him?"

Harry takes his time in answering, settling his cup on the saucer and pouring more tea before nodding. "Yes, I did."

"You went to his match?"

"No, he tracked me down. Through Takeshi Manganji."

"Thatkid!" But it is said with admiration. He feels a bit better, a bit more optimistic about his invention that he steadily thinks should have stayed in the confines in his mind. It has been a long time since anything has made him feel that way. "Will you fight him again?"

For a second, he sees a flash of sorrow in Harry's eyes that surprises him, but the words are strong: "No. I do not think so."

"Too bad."

There is silence as Sean waits for him to continue and while Harry sips his tea. Then, the German boy goes on, "You and your sister are startingly similar."

Sean raises an eyebrow, finding himself more intrigued than surprised. "What makes you say that?"

"You both never ask the question I was expecting. And you both care more about the results than the outcome." Harry gives him a fond smile. "I suppose that all siblings have bonds like that."

To that, Sean cannot answer. How can he? When it comes to his family, especially when it comes to Gina, he believes thinks no words currently exist to tell anyone about what he feels, what he felt, what he should be feeling. So instead of giving words, he only nods and shrugs. Then, he fully understands the situation and yelps: "You contacted Gina?!"

Harry only smiles, showing his evil side. "She said she'll pass on my message when she manages to find you."

As a response, Sean rudely ends the call and groans to himself.
