There are documents to read, rules to analyze, and papers to sign, so when the phone gives off a shrill ring, Gina Firestone is ready to fire her secretary for patching the call through. Still, she supposes it must be very important or else she would not be hearing that incessant noise in the first place.
Not taking her eyes from the stock reports before her, she presses a button to put the caller on speaker and sharply greets: "Gina Firestone."
There is a slight moment of hesitation from the other line before a confident voice says, "I wish to speak with Sean Firestone."
"Sean's not in right now," she replies absently, right before she realizes what the other speaker has just said. "Did you say 'Sean'?"
"Yes," said the other person. "This is the emergency contact number he has given to me. He is your brother, is he not?"
"Yes, of course," she answers hastily. "Would youlike to leave a message?"
There is another momentary pause, one where Gina could hear her heart pounding loudly that she was almost sure the telephone wires are picking its signal and transferring it to the other speaker's lines. Ridiculous notion. Then, the person replies, "I do not know if it would make a difference, but I would like him to know that I have had a match with Kouya Marino."
The news surprises Gina enough for her to drop her pen. This person "I see. II'll be sure to pass that message along." Then, even though she already has an inkling as to who the caller is, she still plunges on: "May I ask who is on the line?"
"Harry Gamble."
Of course, she should have known it was a German accent faintly scratching his English words. Letting a smile spread on her lips, she says, "Mr. Gamble, may I ask you a question?"
"Certainly, Miss Firestone," comes the easy reply as if the caller already knows what she has in mind.
"Was the match satisfactory?"
Another pause, and her smile spreads when she realizes she has caught the caller off-guard.
When he speaks, it is with care, as if he is thinking of the correct words to reveal. "It was indeed unexpected, although I believe the problem of the match's outcome did not lie in my abilities, nor in my opponent's. Will you tell that to Mr. Sean Firestone?"
"When I manage to find him," she says. They bid their respective farewells and Gina presses the 'disconnect' button before returning to work.
It is already late in the evening while she is leaving the building that she realizes that Harry Gamble never answered her question.
