Modality - Cardinal. First Sign of Summer (Solstice) Element - Water.
The Zodiac Constellation Cancer is often said to be the most complex sign of the entire Zodiac. Cancer is associated with the Moon, all things maternal, and the Sea. The Crab, symbol of Cancer, further reinforces the association with the Sea where it resides. Much of the Cancer nature can be seen in the characteristics of the Crab. Since the Sea is the primordial mother of all life, the soup from which every form of life emerges, Cancer represents the cosmic Mother.
The Moon, which rules this sign, is directly responsible for the tidal fluctuations which make life possible. Our Earth is the only one of the inner planets to posess a Moon. We do not find another planet with a moon or moons until we encounter Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. This would seem to indicate that we have a part of the nature of these greater planets, as well as their blessings, by virtue of our Moon.
