He was born in Dublin in 1847 in a family of seven children. As a child, Bram suffered a long and incapaciatating childhood illness but he overcame his disabilities and at the age of sixteen he bacame an athletics champion. He was an active speaker with the Philosofical Society and he eventually became their Precident. After graduation he followed he's father's footsteps and started a career as a clerk but soon found out he was more interested to arts than in papers and in 1871 he wrote the first of his many theatre reviews. In the next seven years he wrote many short stories. In 1878 he married Flarence Balcombe, winning her hand from the young Irish playwriter Oscar Wilde. Although many of his short stories were published his reputation as a author stands almost wholly on his nover "Dracula" /1897/. Stoker's other novels- The Snake's Pass, The Lair of the White Worm and others are largely forgotten. He died in London. |
