Periods of English Literature Since 1800
Here is an overview of Brit Lit after 1800, putting the works into their proper social, historical, and chronological contexts:  What a New Historicist kind of idea!

- The Romantic Period (1798-1832)
Sub-Period of Great Note:  The French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Periods.
1789:  Storming of Bastille
1793:  Royal Family, including Louis XVI, killed; England joins the alliance against France.
1793-4:  The Reign of Terror under Robespierre
1804:  Bonaparte crowned himself Emperor
1815:  After escaping from Elba Island, Bonaparte is finally defeated by Thackeray--no, no, I mean by Nelson, at Waterloo.

*
Sub-period:  The Regency Period (1811-1820)
(During this period, Prince of Wales, named George, acted as regent for George III, the bad guy of the American revolution, who had gone bonkers. )
*

Another Sub-period:  The Brief Reign of King George IV, after George III's timely death.  (1820-1837
)
- Early Victorian
- Mid Victorian
- Late Victorian and Decadence
- Modernism
- Postmodernism
