THE GALLENT BOY IN GRAY
A memorial poem written in 1896 and publised in St. Nicholas Magazine describes the actions of Sgt. Richard Kirkland
after the battle of Fredericksburg. Despite the danger, this confederate lad carried water to the wounded and
dying  Federals suffering in the crossfire of the battle, unable to be rescued. The unknown author noted
:

While a grateful nation showers
Graves heroes wth her flowers,
Here's a wreath for one to-day;

North or South, we claim him ours;
Honor to the boy in Gray!
*It is with high level of honor and respect for fallen
heroes that the Order of Southern Gray pledges
to support.
