May 26th             Slave Lake.  Stayed an extra day here, waiting for Orville and Luc MacCauley to arrive.  They arrived at about 8 pm and stayed the night with Lesly and Jerry.  They took off first thing in the morning for Edmonton.

May 27th             Problems with Lesly's front wheel.  The wheel rim split, from excessive brake pressure on the front wheel.  They couldnt get parts and continued to Peace River.

May 28th             Stopped at McLennan to do bird watching at a major banding sight.  Arrived in Peace River, Alberta.   Had to get parts sent from Edmonton. Parts arrived later that night and we got them assembled by 7 a.m. the next morning.

May 29th             Stayed in Peace River again.  Rained all day.

May 30th              Left Peace River with high winds 40-60 kmh on highway 35.  Progress so slow we stopped at a vehicle inspection station for the night.

May 31st             Temperature +3 with light winds and are off to Dixonville for breakfast.  Store was closed for the first time in a year for inventory  but we met Dita Deahbog, a resident of Dixonville and she invited us in for coffee.  She gave us homemade cookies.  We arrived at Mannin for lunch and camped at Twin Lakes, 125 kilomteters today.

June 1st               In the afternoon we met David Lehmann, the person we stayed with in Cold Lake, Alberta.  We saw a large black bear today, 5 kms from our sight at Keg River.

June 2, 2001        In the morning we saw 3 black bears on the road. We also seen a large muskrat playing possum near the road.  We seen a coyote, a large flock of Black Turns, Ruddy Ducks and American Wigeons.  We arrived in High Level in the rain at 3:30 P.M.
June 3,2001         High Level, Alberta... leaving here today and travelling 200 K to the border.  On the way, stopped at Meandoring River for coffee and ice cream and conversation with Alice and Louise, 2 local people.  A l;ittle further down the road, we met Harry Moses that knew Jeannine Gaulin.  We were determined to get to the N.W.T.  They arrived in North West Territories on June 3rd, 8:45 p.m. a 202 kilometer day.  A record for us, probably never to be repeated.

June 4,2001         At 7:30 a.m., packed and ready to go, a bear came into the camp.  Lesly was yelling and Jerry got out the air horn, and the bear moved away.  Shortly thereafter, Orville, Luc and Alex arrived at the border.  They were returning from Edmonton and Vancouver respectively.  Orville took pictures at the border of Jerry and Lesly and then took off.  We rode 79 kilometers today to Alexander Falls campsite.

June 5, 2001        Enterprises, N.W.T.      All the stores were closed in town but the restaurant sold us some cookies and hot chocolate.  Jer and Les called from this small town inside the N.W.T.  Camped at junction of Yellowknife and #3.  We rode 122 kilometers today.

June 6th, 2001      We stopped at a creek 3 km from Bouvier Creek, N.W.T., 190 K from the Alberta border.  We rode 93 kilometers today, dead tired.

June 7th, 2001       Stopped for lunch at Red Knife River and met 3 japanese people planning to canoe the Thelon River.  They have a website at httpi://www.home.att.ne.jp/air/arctic .  We exchanged gifts and shared lunch together.  Arrived at Sam Beh Deh Campgrounds, , a 55 kilkometer day, 236 K from the border and now only 150 K to Fort Simpson.  Waiting for Jeannine and Orville.

June 8th, 2001      Staying for the weekend camping at Samba Deh with Jeannine, Orville, Luc, Cathy and Alex

June 9th, 2001      Explored the falls and spent the day at Sam Beh Day.

June 10th,2001      Orville travelling with Lesly and Jerry to Checkpoint (junction #7 and #1) .  Jeannine, Luc, Cathy, Alex met us at this junction for lunch, some 87 kilometers from the campsite.
Jeannine then took over from Orville and cycled  with Jerry and Lesly.  Orville drove the car back to Simpson. 

June 10th to the 18th was spent in Fort Simpson, preparing everything for the second stage.  This included repairing cycles, preparing foods to be sent to Watson Lake and Pelly Crossing, Yukon.  We attended a Dene Drum Dance, a musical concert, fishing with Dale, who was so kind to take us in his boat across the McKenzie River.  We caught 7 jackfish and 2 pickerel.  We feasted for 2 days on fish.  We caught about 10 lbs of fillets.  Dale and his wife Pat, local residents and friends of JaNin and Orville,, joined us for dinner.  We also took a flight tour of the Nahanni National Park.  You can see
