Week 1 Updates

June 18:
A call from the Liard Highway indicates that Les, Jer, Jeannine and Orville have done 70 kilometres on day 2 of the second stage of this great adventure!!! The weather is reportedly very hot, so the troups are waiting for a cooldown to continue. To see a summary of the article in the Deh Cho Newspaper please go to www.nnsl.com/newsum.html.

June 21 :
A call from the mobile phone tonight let us know that everyone is safe and healthy OVER. Between the crackling of static and breaking, I was able to discern that they are 50 km from Fort Liard OVER. Friday night, a call from a land phone will be much more productive and will be easier to get all the good details OVER.

June 22:
Jeannine called me tonight from Ft. Liard. They would like to say thank you to the following people. Jeannine May for rescuing them from the mud and rain and mosquitos. Clinton from the Liard Taxi who passes them each day on his way to and from Simpson. He brings them treats and bread and brings things they left at the campground. Thank you so much to all the traffic who slow down and don't pelt them with rocks and gravel (and you motorhome drivers who passed the cyclists and sandblasted them...not nice). Jeannine said that at first she didn't think she would get used to driving the bike with the full trailer behind because it was all over the road and hard to control...took about 15 mintues or so to be comfortable. They average about 11 km/hour. Some of the hills are 3-4 km long and sometimes the feeling is "I am never going to make it up to the top of this hill." Maximum downhill speed is 26 km/hour (Speedy Gonzales)!

To date: 290 km in Stage 2 of Cycle Odyssey 2001!
