REPORT 8.6.2001 VISIT TO THE CLINIC OF THE ABUSED CHILDREN

The clinic of the abused children was established in 1986. It came about as a response need in caring for sexually abused children to offer proper medical examination. The clinic was receiving some support from members of St. Nicholas. It admits the children from the age of babies, to 18 but currently they are considering the age of 19 and 20.

After a thorough researches it has been found that the people who abuse most of the children are: police, strangers, priests and teachers. The Clinic treats the children and discharges them after recovering. They treat from every tribe but mostly; they deal with Houghton and also offer training to rural areas.

The clinic offers a medical examination free of charge. They also train the children to be in a position to appear in court and disclose what they encountered without fear. Many of them, experienced violence when they were abused. The clinic currently holds nine staff but there is a different doctor who visits the clinic every day to treat the children.

They get their financial support from donors and they use it to pay the doctors and staff. They also get volunteers as councilors who render free services of which they appreciate so much because it is a human resource.

Some of the requests from the staffs in the clinic were:

1. Portable Computers with projector

2. Financial Support

3. Free Councilors

After this we took our way to Twilight

rehabilitation center.

Feeding Scheme for the Homeless

Mission.JPG (31953 bytes)

On Thursday 21st June 2001, we accompanied Father George to the "Central Business District -a pavement area outside Joubert Park, where he feeds the destitute and homeless who sleep in the surrounding buildings. His Eminence Archbishop Seraphim, Mrs Melpo Gerondoudis from the Mission Committee and Mrs Koulla Panagiotou. and myself from the Ladies’ Committee of the Archbishopric, were taken to the scene by Mr Stelios Palierakis of the Greek radio station.

The pavement was littered with piles of refuse and makeshift shelters, which served as sleeping quarters - not exactly a healthy environment.

Plates of drink and food, which had been prepared in advance by Father George, were handed out to approximately 100 people who were in dire need of some sustenance, before Father George moved on to another distribution point.

His Eminence stated that it would be more

practical to try and obtain a permanent place from where food could be distributed on a regular basis. This would be investigated.
