Every Podiatrist has individuals with diabetes in his or her practice. From early in a podiatrist medical education, the causes, treatment and preventative care of the diabetic person is drilled home. Every podiatrist, at his or her time of graduation has been exposed to all aspects of foot care for the diabetic. The kind of residency your podiatrist had will determine the level of expertise above the standard that podiatry requires your podiatrist to have.
I did my residency at the VA Medical Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This was a surgical program with veterans as patients extending back to the first world war, with many diabetic patients. As good as my training in diabetes care is, I am still only as good as the dedication of the diabetic individuals that I work with.
The single most important person in the care of diabetes is the diabetic. Diabetic individuals must be aware of their condition and the effect it will produce on their body. The single most important factor in podiatric diabetic care is prevention. If an ingrown nail can be prevented, an
infection may be averted. If a callous can be controlled, an ulcer may be stopped before it has a foothold.
Having diabetes requires a lifestyle modification. You must be constantly aware of your diet, this being one of the single most important factors that you can have control over. I try to have the patient make foot care part of the lifestyle
