NiNi’s Journal:

Virtual strangers, how good of an idea was this, I mean, really, it’s just ice cream. They could all be crazy. What if they leave me on the side of the road? Maybe I should leave them on the side of the road; I’d have to be driving. Well, I’m in it now- and sitting on a couch in the back of a van (nice couch though, maybe I could use it to…). A person can’t even see the scenery in this piece of junk.

777 miles, and I fell asleep. We all did, everyone but Kevin. Kevin, ever so brilliant Kevin, just drove us 230 miles in the wrong direction. What kind of genius could drive 3 hours in the wrong direction? All the while, the rest of us sleep at his mercy. That messed up our plan of saving time by driving during the nights. When we decided to switch drivers and take turns sleeping we assumed everyone could read a map. Anyway, now we are back in Minnesota, I don’t think they even have a Ben and Jerry’s Scoop Shop? I think we should work out a rotation where two people are awake at all times.

We have a renewed vigor to reach Vermont. Kevin has reluctantly agreed to receive assistance with directions when he’s driving and get a second opinion when he’s navigating.

Driving though a small town in Wisconsin, we see a bright red barn flashing a large yellow smiley face. Too perky, too annoying—Mel suggests we flip it off. One fluid motion, the windows are down and we are extending our arms unwelcomingly at the symbol of cheer. Flipping off that stupid barn seemed to prove something to those people. What did they really expect to accomplish with that damn grin?

I made everyone get out of the van to see the most amazing Northern Lights!! They were absolutely gorgeous. I don’t know that anyone else was as impressed as I was.

We stopped to tour an old lighthouse claiming authenticity and originality. First of all, the lighthouse wasn’t more than two stories tall. Who wants to see a short lighthouse? Secondly, the tour consisted of moving from one spot of grass to another while the tour guide (who was way too in to her job) told us that “50 years ago the lighthouse keepers wife (who must not have had a name) kept her garden on the very ground we were now standing on.” We paid $8.00 per person for this tour and all they can tell us is that this is where the garden used to be!

Kevin has been sleeping against the corded front seat, he has indentations in the side of his face like a Star Trek character.
